About Dhammachakra Pravartan Din

Dhammachakra Pravartan Din marks the day Dr B. R. Ambedkar embraced Buddhism with lakhs of his followers at Deekshabhoomi in Nagpur, on 14 October 1956. Because that day was Ashoka Vijayadashami, the main gathering at Deekshabhoomi is held each year on Vijayadashami, which in 2027 falls on Saturday, 9 October 2027. Many Ambedkarite Buddhists also mark 14 October itself.

Dhammachakra pravartan means setting the wheel of the Dhamma in motion. In Buddhist tradition the phrase describes the Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath. Ambedkarite Buddhists use it for 14 October 1956, when Dr B. R. Ambedkar, 21 years after announcing at Yeola that he would leave Hinduism, took the Buddhist refuges at Nagpur and led his followers into the Dhamma with him.

For the community that followed him, mostly Dalits from Maharashtra and central India, the day is a second birth. It is kept with joy, not mourning, and with a sense of pride that is hard to overstate.

What happened on 14 October 1956

The ceremony took place on open ground in Nagpur that came to be called Deekshabhoomi, the land of initiation. In the morning, Ambedkar and his wife, Savita Ambedkar, took the Three Jewels and the Five Precepts from Mahasthavir Chandramani, a senior Burmese monk based at Kushinagar. Ambedkar then turned to the crowd and administered the refuges, the precepts and 22 vows he had written himself. The vows rejected caste, ritual and the worship of Hindu gods, and committed the new Buddhists to equality and to the Buddha's path.

How many people converted that day is counted differently. Estimates run from about 3.65 lakh to 4 lakh in encyclopaedia accounts, over 3.8 lakh in a 2025 Mooknayak report, and 5 lakh in many community accounts. Two days later, on 16 October, Ambedkar held a second ceremony at Chandrapur, where more than 3 lakh people took the Dhamma. That ground is also called Deekshabhoomi.

Ambedkar explained his choices in his speech that day. He chose Nagpur because he saw it as the land of the Nag people, who in his reading had taken up Buddhism early and spread it. He chose the date because Vijayadashami that year was kept as Ashoka Vijayadashami, linked by tradition to the emperor Ashoka's turn to Buddhism.

Less than two months later, on 6 December 1956, Ambedkar died in Delhi. That day is now marked as Mahaparinirvan Din.

Why there are two dates

Because 14 October 1956 was Vijayadashami, the community keeps both. The Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Smarak Samiti, which runs Deekshabhoomi, holds its main programme on Vijayadashami, following the Hindu calendar date, so it moves between late September and late October. The fixed date, 14 October, is also marked at Deekshabhoomi and by many Buddhist families, viharas and student groups across India. Some years the two fall close together. In 2025, the main programme was on 2 October.

If you are not sure which date someone keeps, ask. Both are correct.

The gathering at Deekshabhoomi

Lakhs of people travel to Nagpur for the day, many from Vidarbha's villages, and many sleep on the grounds. The programme spreads over several days. In 2025 it ran like this.

  1. Two days before
    Dhamma diksha

Anyone who wishes to take the Dhamma can do so, continuing the 1956 ceremony.

  2. Eve of the day, morning
    Panchsheel flag

The Samiti's president, Bhadant Arya Nagarjuna Surai Sasai, hoists the five-coloured Buddhist flag.

  3. Eve of the day, evening
Samata Sainik Dal and Dhamma Parishad

The volunteer corps Ambedkar founded gives a salute, and monks from Asian countries speak.

  4. Main day, 9 am
    Buddha Vandana and the vows

Mass recitation of the Buddha Vandana and the vows, led from the stage.

  5. Main day, night
    Cultural programme

Songs, plays and readings, often on the Constitution.

Book stalls are a big part of the day. Pilgrims buy Ambedkar's writings, Buddhist texts and portraits to take home, and the stalls stay open well into the night.

The stupa itself was begun in July 1978 and inaugurated on 18 December 2001. It is hollow, with a large hall inside under the dome, and holds an urn with some of Ambedkar's ashes. The Bodhi tree beside it was grown from branches of the tree at Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka.

Across India

Outside Nagpur, Buddhist viharas in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and elsewhere hold vandana and talks, and processions carry portraits of the Buddha and Babasaheb. Many families dress in white, decorate the house with the Panchsheel flag and visit a vihara. New conversion ceremonies are often held on this day in other cities too.

The day sits within a calendar of Ambedkarite observance: Ambedkar Jayanti on 14 April, Dhammachakra Pravartan Din in autumn, and Mahaparinirvan Din on 6 December. Many also keep Buddha Purnima.

Do

  • Say "Jai Bhim" and "Namo Buddhay". These are the greetings people use with each other on this day.
  • Call it by its name. For Ambedkarite Buddhists, this is not Dussehra.
  • If you visit Deekshabhoomi, dress modestly, remove shoes inside the stupa and expect huge crowds.

Avoid

  • Don't send a Dussehra or Ravan Dahan card to a Buddhist friend on this day.
  • Don't treat caste as a light topic, or make the message about conversion as a debate.

How to wish someone on Dhammachakra Pravartan Din

This is a proud, celebratory day for Ambedkarite Buddhists, and the usual greeting is "Jai Bhim, Namo Buddhay". A good wish speaks of the Dhamma, of dignity and equality, and of the journey Babasaheb began at Deekshabhoomi. It suits Buddhist friends, family and colleagues, and anyone travelling to Nagpur for the day. For them it is not Dussehra, so greet them by the day's own name. Dhammachakra Pravartan Din 2027 falls on Saturday, 9 October 2027.

Is Dhammachakra Pravartan Din on 14 October or on Dussehra?

Both. Dr Ambedkar converted on 14 October 1956, which was Vijayadashami that year, so the main gathering at Deekshabhoomi follows Vijayadashami each year, and many Buddhists also mark 14 October as the fixed anniversary.

Why did Dr Ambedkar choose Nagpur for his conversion?

In his speech on 14 October 1956, Ambedkar said he chose Nagpur because it was the land of the Nag people, who he believed had embraced Buddhism early and helped spread it across India.

What does "Jai Bhim, Namo Buddhay" mean?

How many people converted to Buddhism with Ambedkar?

Accounts differ. Most put the crowd that took the Dhamma with Ambedkar at Deekshabhoomi, Nagpur, on 14 October 1956 at between about 3.65 lakh and 5 lakh people. More than 3 lakh more converted at his second ceremony in Chandrapur on 16 October.

What are the 22 vows?

The 22 vows are pledges Dr Ambedkar wrote and gave to his followers at the 1956 conversion. They reject caste, ritual and belief in Hindu gods, and commit the new Buddhist to equality, compassion and the Buddha's Noble Eightfold Path.

Can anyone visit Deekshabhoomi on Dhammachakra Pravartan Din?
