About Jamai Shashti

Jamai Shashti is the Bengali day on which a mother-in-law worships the goddess Shashthi and then honours her son-in-law, the jamai, with blessings, gifts and a long lunch. It falls on the sixth day of the bright fortnight of Jyeshtha, which in 2027 is Thursday, 10 June 2027. Bengali Hindu families in West Bengal, Tripura, Bangladesh and the diaspora keep it.

In most Indian households the son-in-law is a guest to be looked after. On Jamai Shashti, Bengal turns that into a ritual with a date, a goddess and a menu. The married daughter comes home with her husband, her mother keeps a vow for both of them, and the afternoon goes to a lunch that families plan days ahead.

Shashthi, the cat and Aranya Shashthi

The goddess behind the day is Shashthi, a folk mother-goddess who protects young children. She rides a cat, and Bengali homes worship her on the sixth day after a birth and on a sixth day in many months of the year. The Shashthi of Jyeshtha is the one called Aranya Shashthi, the forest Shashthi, and many households still worship her with a branch of the banyan, the tree held sacred to her, set beside a pot of water. Offerings often go in sets of six: six fruits, six betel leaves, six sweets.

The story told with the vow is about a greedy young wife who ate food on the sly and blamed the cat. The cat complained to its goddess, and the woman lost her children. She got them back only after she repented and kept Shashthi's fast. In the later telling, her parents invited her and her husband home for the puja, and the vow for children became a day for the daughter's husband too.

There is a plainer explanation too. Girls were often married into villages far away, and travel was slow and costly, so a fixed day when the couple visited the bride's parents kept the families in touch. The Bengali Hindu reading of Durga Puja as Uma's yearly visit to her parents' home carries a similar idea.

How the date is set

Jamai Shashti is the Shashthi tithi of Shukla paksha in the lunar month of Jyeshtha. It usually lands between late May and mid June. In a year with an extra lunar month, it moves later: in 2026, which had an extra Jyeshtha, Drik Panchang and the Bishuddha Siddhanta Panjika both put it on 20 June, which was 4 Asharh 1433 in the Bengali calendar. Families go by their own panjika, so check the date with the elders in the house before booking leave.

In recent years the West Bengal Finance Department has ordered state government offices to close at 2 pm on Jamai Shashti, through a notice issued a few days before. In 2024 that was on 12 June. It is a half day, not a public holiday, and private employers decide for themselves.

What happens on the day

The order varies by family, but the shape is much the same.

  1. The mother-in-law's vowShe fasts in the morning and worships Shashthi at home, often with a water pot, durba grass, paddy and seasonal fruit. Some families do the puja at a shashthitala, a spot under a tree set apart for the goddess.
  2. The welcomeWhen the jamai arrives, she does a small aarti and puts a tilak of curd or sandalwood on his forehead.
  3. The threadA yellow thread from the puja, the Shashthi suto, is tied on his wrist for protection.
  4. The fanShe waves a new palm-leaf hand fan over him. Many mothers-in-law say "shaat, shaat, shaat" while doing it, a blessing for a long, safe life.
  5. The blessing with grainPaddy and durba grass are placed on his head, and a plate of fruit is touched to his forehead.
  6. GiftsNew clothes for the jamai, often a dhuti and panjabi, and a saree for the daughter. He rarely arrives empty-handed either: sweets and fruit are the usual return.
  7. The mealAfter the puja the mother-in-law serves the jamai herself, and he eats first.

The Jamai Shashti lunch

There is no fixed menu, but June decides a lot of it. Ilish (hilsa) is in season, so it appears as shorshe ilish in mustard paste or ilish paturi steamed in banana leaf. Chingri malaikari, prawns in coconut milk, and kosha mangsho, slow-cooked mutton, are common in families that eat meat. A proper meal starts bitter with shukto and moves through dal, fries and fish to chutney and dessert.

Mango is the other star: ripe mangoes and litchis on the table, aamer chutney made with green mango, and aam pora shorbot, a drink of roasted raw mango, to cut the heat. The sweet course is usually mishti doi set in clay pots, sandesh and rosogolla. Vegetarian homes and those keeping Vaishnav rules build the meal around shukto, potoler dolma, basanti pulao and payesh instead.

What to write

Jamai Shashti is a family day, so wishes go between in-laws, from a daughter to her mother, or between friends who know the family. It is not a day for office greetings. If you are not Bengali and your partner's family keeps it, a short note in Bengali to your mother-in-law goes a long way, and so does eating the second helping.

Do

  • Thank the mother-in-law by name or as "Ma". The day is about her care as much as your plate.
  • Bring sweets or fruit from a shop the family likes, and wear the thread she ties until it comes off.
  • If you can't travel, call at lunchtime. That is the hour the family will be thinking of you.

Avoid

  • Don't joke about being "pampered" in front of the in-laws. The jokes belong among friends.
  • Don't send a Jamai Shashti wish to a whole office group. Most colleagues won't be keeping it.
To a mother-in-law, from the jamai
Pronam, Ma. Thank you for the fan, the thread and the ilish I'm still thinking about. Keep your blessings coming and I'll keep turning up hungry.
To a son-in-law, from his mother-in-law
Shaat, shaat. May Ma Shashthi keep you both safe and well all year. Come early tomorrow, the mangoes are waiting.
To parents, from a married daughter
We'll be there by noon, Ma. Don't spend all morning in the kitchen. Just keep the mishti doi for us.
To a friend at his first Jamai Shashti
First Jamai Shashti. Sit up straight, praise the shukto, and don't refuse the third piece of fish. Enjoy every bite.
From a jamai who can't travel this year
Missing your lunch today, Ma. Please tie a thread for me at the puja, and save one mango. I'll come for it soon.
To a couple, from family friends
Wishing you both a happy Jamai Shashti. May the day bring blessings, a full plate and a long, easy afternoon at home.
In Bengali
Jamaishashthir anek shubhechha, Ma. Apnar ashirbad sobsomoy sathe thakuk. (Warm Jamai Shashti wishes, Ma. May your blessing always be with us.)

Jamai Shashti has a cousin in Bhai Dooj, kept in Bengal as Bhai Phonta, when a sister prays for her brother's long life and feeds him. Both days put one family member at the centre of a vow and a meal.

How to wish someone on Jamai Shashti

A good Jamai Shashti wish is warm and a little playful, because the day itself is affectionate and food-heavy. Sons-in-law write to thank the mother-in-law, mothers-in-law bless the jamai and the daughter together, and friends tease a newly married man about his first feast. Mention the real things: the fan, the thread, the ilish and the mango. Keep it to family; it is not a day to wish strangers or colleagues formally.

What should a son-in-law bring on Jamai Shashti?

Why does the date of Jamai Shashti change every year?

Jamai Shashti follows the moon: it is the sixth tithi of the bright half of the lunar month of Jyeshtha. That puts it between late May and late June, and later than usual in years with an extra lunar month, so families confirm it in their Bengali panjika.
