About Vasu Baras

Vasu Baras, or Govatsa Dwadashi, is the cow-and-calf puja that opens Diwali in Maharashtra and Goa, and in 2026 it falls on Thursday, 5 November 2026. Mothers fast through the day, worship a cow with her calf at dusk and light the first lamp of Diwali for them. In Gujarat the same evening is Vagh Baras, when traders close their old account books.

In a Maharashtrian home, Diwali starts with a cow. On Vasu Baras the women of the house, mothers above all, keep a fast, and at dusk they worship a cow standing with her calf. The first panati of the season, the small clay lamp that will be lit every evening until Bhaubeej, is lit for the two of them. Marathi papers describe the day in exactly those terms: Diwali's first lamp goes to the cow and calf.

Baras is the Marathi form of dwadashi, the twelfth lunar day. Vasu is usually read as wealth, and Drik Panchang notes that Vasu, a deity of wealth, is also worshipped. Panchangs use the Sanskrit name, Govatsa Dwadashi: go is cow, vatsa is calf.

What happens at home on Vasu Baras

In villages the puja is done with a real cow and calf. In flats a clay pair, a silver figure or a picture stands in, or the family goes to a temple goshala.

  1. Keep the fastWomen, especially mothers, fast or eat a single meal for their children's health. Many households keep milk, curd, ghee and wheat off the plate all day.
  2. Prepare the pairThe cow and her calf are bathed, dressed with cloth and garlands, and marked with turmeric or kumkum.
  3. Worship at duskThe puja is done at pradosh, the hours after sunset when cattle come home. Water is poured at the calf's feet as arghya, then flowers, incense, a lamp and aarti, with a prayer to Nandini.
  4. Feed them firstThe pair are fed gram, sprouted moong, jaggery and wheat preparations. In parts of Goa, families with cattle cook puran for the cow.
  5. Light the first panatiThe first lamp of Diwali goes near the cow, and the first rangoli of the season is drawn at the door.
  6. Break the fastOnly after the puja. The meal in many homes is bajra bhakri with gavar (cluster bean) bhaji, cooked without milk or ghee.

The food rules vary more than the puja. Drik Panchang, following the Bhavishyottara Purana, rules out milk, curd, ghee, buttermilk, kheer and oil-fried food. An account from Goa in The Goan adds wheat and moong. The usual explanation is that for one day the cow's milk is left to her calf. Ask the household you are visiting rather than assuming one rule.

Why a cow with her calf

The day is a thanksgiving to the animal that fed the household, and the Bhavishya Purana is the text usually cited for its rules. It is also a mother's fast: a mother is worshipped in the presence of her young, by mothers praying for theirs.

Hence the second name, Nandini Vrat. Nandini is the wish-granting cow, daughter of Kamadhenu, kept by the sage Vasishtha. In the opening cantos of Kalidasa's Raghuvamsha, the childless King Dilipa is told to serve her. When a lion seizes her in the forest he offers his own body instead; the lion turns out to be a test, and Nandini blesses him with a son, Raghu.

The vrat katha in Drik Panchang tells a different story. Shiva leaves Parvati, disguised as a cow with her calf, with a group of sages and returns as a tiger to test them; a second part credits this fast with protecting the child Dhruva. The stories differ, but the prayer is the same: keep the child safe.

Sarvadevamaye devi sarvadevair alankrite, matar mamabhilashitam saphalam kuru nandini.

Roughly: mother Nandini, in whom all the gods live, make my wish come true.

Vagh Baras, Bach Baras and other names

The same tithi travels under several names, and one name causes real confusion.

NameWhere you will hear itWhat is different
Vasu Baras, VasubarasMaharashtra, GoaThe first day of Diwali: cow and calf puja, the first panati, rangoli
Govatsa DwadashiPanchangs across IndiaThe Sanskrit calendar name for the same day
Nandini VratWherever the fast is kept for childrenNamed for Nandini, the cow of Vasishtha
Vagh BarasGujaratCow worship, and traders settle the old year's accounts
Guru DwadashiDatta tradition, Swaminarayan calendarsThe Pithapuram Datta temple in Andhra Pradesh marks Shripad Shrivallabha's aradhana

Swaminarayan sources explain vagh as the settling of debts. Gujarati business families clear the old books that day, avoid new transactions, and open fresh ledgers only after Diwali and Labh Panchami.

Bachh Baras is the trap. Wikipedia lists it as another name for this day, but Drik Panchang keeps Bachha Baras as its own fast, about two months earlier in Bhadrapada. If a Gujarati or Rajasthani friend mentions Bach Baras, check which day they mean.

How the date is set, and the Diwali that follows

Vasu Baras is the Dwadashi of the waning fortnight in Ashwin, as Maharashtra and Gujarat count months. North Indian calendars, which end months at the full moon, call the same fortnight Kartik; the date is identical.

Because the puja is in the evening, Dwadashi must be running at pradosh. If it covers the evening on two days, the first is taken. Usually that puts Vasu Baras the day before Dhanteras. Sometimes Trayodashi begins during the evening and the two share a date: Drik Panchang's Mumbai listing does this for 15 October 2028. Check a panchang set to your own city.

In Maharashtra the week runs like this:

  1. Vasu Baras · Dwadashi
    Cow and calf puja

The first panati and rangoli; mothers fast

  2. Dhantrayodashi · Trayodashi
    Dhanteras

Lakshmi, Kubera and Dhanvantari; a lamp for Yama at the door

  3. Narak Chaturdashi · Chaturdashi
    Narak Chaturdashi

The pre-dawn oil bath and the first faral breakfast

  4. Lakshmi Puja · Amavasya
    Diwali

The main evening puja, and account books worshipped in shops

  5. Padwa · Pratipada
    Diwali Padwa

Bali Pratipada; husbands and wives exchange gifts

  6. Bhaubeej · Dwitiya
    Bhai Dooj

    Sisters do their brothers' aarti

Vasu Baras is a working day, which suits a puja meant for dusk. Braj and Vaishnava communities keep their own cow festival later, on Gopashtami.

Do

  • Use "Vasubarasachya hardik shubhechha" for Marathi friends and "Vagh Baras" for Gujarati ones.
  • Ask before photographing a woman doing the puja; for many it is a private vow.

Avoid

  • Don't take pedha, barfi or other milk sweets to a household keeping the fast today. Fruit or dry fruit is safer.
  • Don't assume every Marathi or Gujarati household keeps the fast. Customs differ by family and community.

How to wish someone on Vasu Baras

A Vasu Baras wish is a Diwali wish with a particular door into it. Mention the cow and calf, the first panati, the rangoli at the gate, or the mother who is fasting for her children and will break it with bajra bhakri tonight. Marathi friends will appreciate "Vasubarasachya hardik shubhechha". Gujarati friends know the day as Vagh Baras. Keep it simple and warm, and don't send a milk sweet to someone keeping the fast.

Frequently asked questions

When is Vasu Baras in 2026?

Vasu Baras 2026 falls on Thursday, 5 November 2026.

Why is Vasu Baras celebrated?

Vasu Baras is a thanksgiving to the cow, worshipped together with her calf, and it marks the start of Diwali in Maharashtra and Goa. Mothers keep a fast that day for the health and safety of their children, linked in tradition to Nandini, the wish-granting cow of the sage Vasishtha.

What is eaten on Vasu Baras?

Many households avoid milk, curd, ghee and wheat for the day, and some also avoid fried food, explaining that the cow's milk is left for her calf. Women who fast usually break it after the evening puja with bajra bhakri and gavar (cluster bean) bhaji.

Is Vasu Baras the same as Vagh Baras?

Yes, they fall on the same day, the twelfth day of the waning moon before Dhanteras. Maharashtra calls it Vasu Baras and centres it on the cow and calf puja, while in Gujarat it is Vagh Baras, when cows are worshipped and business families clear their old account books.

Is Bach Baras the same day as Vasu Baras?

Not always. Some lists use Bach Baras as another name for Govatsa Dwadashi, but Drik Panchang treats Bachha Baras as a separate fast for children kept about two months earlier, on Bhadrapada Krishna Dwadashi in the purnimanta calendar.

What if you don't have a cow to worship on Vasu Baras?

Families in cities use a clay or metal figure of a cow and calf, or a picture, and perform the same puja at dusk. Others visit a temple goshala to worship and feed the cows there.

Can men observe Vasu Baras?

Yes. The fast is kept mostly by mothers, but the whole family usually joins the evening puja and the lighting of the first lamp, and anyone can feed or worship the cow and calf.
