About International Day of Older Persons

The International Day of Older Persons on 1 October recognises the contributions of older people and draws attention to issues they face, such as health, care and age discrimination. The UN General Assembly established the day in December 1990.

People around the world are living longer, and the share of older people in the population is growing. Older people contribute to their families and communities as carers, workers, volunteers and keepers of memory and tradition. At the same time, many face challenges such as poor health, loneliness, financial insecurity and ageism.

The UN General Assembly voted in December 1990 to observe 1 October as the International Day of Older Persons, and the day was first marked in 1991. That same year, the UN adopted the Principles for Older Persons, built around independence, participation, care, self-fulfilment and dignity.

How it is marked

Governments, NGOs and senior citizens' associations hold health camps, talks on rights and benefits, and events that honour older members of the community. Schools invite grandparents to share stories or organise visits to care homes. In India, where respect for elders is a strong family value, many people use the day to spend time with grandparents, help them with a task, or simply listen to their memories. Workplaces sometimes recognise retired colleagues or older staff.
