About Kalabhairav Jayanti

Kalabhairav Jayanti, also called Kaal Bhairav Jayanti or Bhairava Ashtami, marks the day Shiva is believed to have taken his fierce form as Bhairava, the guardian of time and of the city of Kashi. In 2026 it falls on Tuesday, 1 December 2026, the eighth day of the waning moon in Margashirsha (Kartik in the amanta calendar). Devotees fast, keep a night vigil and crowd Bhairava temples, above all in Varanasi, Ujjain and Maharashtra.

Bhairava is Shiva in his most frightening form: a dark ascetic with a skull in his hand, snakes for ornaments and a dog as his vehicle. The name is usually explained as "the terrible one", and devotees read it the other way round too, as the one who destroys fear. Kaal means both time and death, so Kaal Bhairav is the form of Shiva that rules over both.

Not every Hindu keeps this day. It matters most to Shaiva devotees, to people near a Bhairava temple, and to families, many of them in Maharashtra, for whom Bhairav is the kuldaivat, the family deity.

The story of Brahma's fifth head

The Shiva Purana tells it this way. Brahma and Vishnu were arguing over which of them was supreme when a pillar of light appeared between them, the same column of fire remembered on Maha Shivaratri. Neither could find its end. Brahma lied that he had reached the top. To punish that lie, Shiva produced Bhairava, who cut off one of Brahma's five heads.

Killing a Brahmin, even a divine one, carries the sin called brahmahatya. Brahma's skull stuck to Bhairava's hand, and he wandered the worlds as a beggar carrying it. Only when he entered Kashi did the skull fall away and the sin leave him. Shiva then made him the city's kotwal, its chief of police.

Versions differ. Bhairava comes from between Shiva's brows in one, from his anger or his blood in others, and Brahma's fault is sometimes pride rather than a lie. The hour differs too: Drik Panchang cites the Shiva Rahasya for a midday appearance, while Marathi sources speak of the fourth watch of the night. The fast, either way, is kept through the night.

How the date is set

Every month has a Kalashtami, the eighth day (ashtami) of the waning moon, when Bhairava's devotees fast. The one in Margashirsha is the big one, his Jayanti. In the purnimanta calendar used in the north the month is Margashirsha; in the amanta calendar of Maharashtra, Gujarat and the south the same fortnight still belongs to Kartik. Both name the same day.

So the Jayanti always comes eight days after Kartik Purnima, the full moon of Dev Deepawali in Varanasi.

Because it is a night fast, the rule is that the ashtami must be running after dark. Drik Panchang picks the day on which the tithi lasts at least one ghati, about 24 minutes, after the evening twilight; if it doesn't, the fast moves to the day before. In 2027, for example, the ashtami begins on the evening of 20 November and ends before dusk on the 21st, so the Jayanti is kept on the 20th.

Where Bhairava is worshipped

WhereNameWhat to know
VaranasiKaal Bhairav, Kashi ke KotwalTemple at Bhaironath, Vishweshwarganj, near the Head Post Office; the present building is thought to date from the mid-17th century. Only the garlanded face of the image is visible, seated on a dog.
UjjainKal BhairavTemple on the Shipra at Bhairavgarh, named in the Avanti Khanda of the Skanda Purana. He is the chief of the eight Bhairavas and the city's guardian.
MaharashtraBhairoba, Bahiroba, Bhairavnath, KalbhairavnathA village guardian and family deity, often paired with Jogeshwari or Bhavani; temples at Sonari, Veer in Purandar and Bavdhan near Wai.
KarnatakaKalabhairaveshwaraGuardian deity of Adichunchanagiri in Mandya district, held especially dear by Vokkaligas.
Tamil NaduBhairavar, VairavarVillage guardian of the eight directions; Ashta Bhairava shrines at Sirkazhi and elsewhere.

In Kashi the Kotwal comes first. The district administration's own temple guide repeats the belief that no one can stay in the city without his permission. Pilgrims call on him when they arrive, and on leaving many tie a black thread, the kala dhaga, in his name. A visit to Kashi Vishwanath, people say, is not complete without his darshan.

Ujjain is known for something else. Liquor is offered here, a survival of the tantric five offerings. The priest raises a saucer to the image's lips, the liquor seems to vanish, and part of the bottle comes back to the devotee as prasad. The silver face of the deity wears a Maratha turban, which tradition links to the general Mahadaji Shinde, who is said to have offered his own pagri here after the defeat at Panipat in 1761 and later restored the temple.

Maharashtra adds a further link. Khandoba of Jejuri is known in Sanskrit texts as Martanda Bhairava, and his festival, Champa Shashti, falls about two weeks after Kalabhairav Jayanti, so for many Marathi families the season is one of Bhairava worship from start to end.

How the day is kept

  1. FastDevotees fast through the day, as on any Kalashtami; how strictly varies by family.
  2. Puja through the nightDrik Panchang describes worship in every watch of the night, three arghya offerings and a vigil with stories of Shiva.
  3. ReciteThe Kalabhairava Ashtakam, eight verses traditionally credited to Adi Shankaracharya, or the simple mantra "Om Kalabhairavaya Namah".
  4. OfferHalwa, kheer, gulgule or jalebi are offered first, then a share goes to a dog, Bhairava's vehicle. Dishes of black urad, like dahi bhalle or pakoras, are given to someone in need.

Kashika puradhinatha Kalabhairavam bhaje. (I worship Kalabhairava, lord of the city of Kashi.)

Refrain of the Kalabhairava Ashtakam

What to write

The usual Hindi wish is "Kaal Bhairav Jayanti ki hardik shubhkamnayein", and "Jai Kaal Bhairav" or "Jai Baba Kaal Bhairav" works on its own. In Marathi, "Kalbhairav Jayantichya hardik shubhechha".

For your parents
Jai Kaal Bhairav, Ma, Papa. Hope the fast is easy on you today. Keep a little prasad aside for the dog at the gate, and some for me. I'll call after the evening aarti.
For a friend in Kashi
Jai Baba Kaal Bhairav. Aaj Bhaironath jao to mere naam ka kaala dhaaga bhi baandh lena. (Hail Baba Kaal Bhairav. If you go to Bhaironath today, tie a black thread in my name too.)
In Hindi
Kaal Bhairav Jayanti ki hardik shubhkamnayein. Baba Kaal Bhairav aapko har dar se mukt rakhein aur aapke ghar ki raksha karein. (Heartfelt wishes on Kaal Bhairav Jayanti. May Baba Kaal Bhairav free you from every fear and protect your home.)
In Marathi
Kalbhairav Jayantichya hardik shubhechha. Bhairavnathachi krupa tumchya kutumbavar sadaiv raho. Jai Kalbhairav. (Heartfelt wishes on Kalbhairav Jayanti. May Bhairavnath's grace always be on your family. Hail Kalbhairav.)
For someone fasting
Thinking of you on Kaal Bhairav Jayanti. Hope the fast goes gently and the night vigil is a peaceful one. Save me some prasad.
For a colleague
Wishing you a peaceful Kaal Bhairav Jayanti. May the lord of time keep time on your side this year, and keep you and your family safe.
For a friend in a hard time
I know things have been frightening lately. On Kaal Bhairav Jayanti I'm praying that the fear gets lighter. Bhairava is the one who takes fear away, and I'm here too, whenever you want to talk.

Do

  • Ask whether Bhairav is the family's kuldaivat; if he is, mention the family temple by name.
  • If you feed a dog after the puja, a plain roti is kinder to its stomach than a jalebi.
  • Check the date with the family's own panchang or temple if it is close to a tithi change.

Avoid

  • Don't joke about the liquor offering at Ujjain. It is a ritual for those who keep it, and many devotees never drink.
  • Don't use skulls or gory art on a card to a colleague who doesn't follow Bhairava; a lamp or a trident reads better.
  • Don't assume every Hindu keeps the day. Many Vaishnava families don't, and that's fine.

How to wish someone on Kalabhairav Jayanti

A Kaal Bhairav Jayanti wish asks for protection and courage: freedom from fear, a safe home, steadiness through a hard stretch. \"Kaal Bhairav Jayanti ki hardik shubhkamnayein\" or simply \"Jai Kaal Bhairav\" suits Hindi speakers; Marathi families say \"Kalbhairav Jayantichya hardik shubhechha\". Keep the tone devotional rather than party-festive, mention Kashi or the family's Bhairavnath temple if it is theirs, and leave out jokes about the liquor offering at Ujjain.

Frequently asked questions

When is Kalabhairav Jayanti in 2026?

Kalabhairav Jayanti 2026 falls on Tuesday, 1 December 2026.

Why is Kaal Bhairav Jayanti celebrated?

Kaal Bhairav Jayanti marks the day Shiva is believed to have appeared as Bhairava, his fierce form, who in the Shiva Purana cuts off Brahma's fifth head to punish a lie. Freed of that sin in Kashi, Bhairava became the city's guardian. Devotees fast and pray to him for protection and freedom from fear.

What is the difference between Kalashtami and Kaal Bhairav Jayanti?

Kalashtami is the eighth day of the waning moon in every lunar month, and Bhairava's devotees fast on each one. Kaal Bhairav Jayanti is the Kalashtami of Margashirsha (Kartik in the amanta calendar), the most important of the year, because it is the day of his appearance.

Why is Kaal Bhairav called the Kotwal of Kashi?

Tradition says Bhairava was freed of the sin of killing Brahma only when he reached Kashi, and Shiva then appointed him the city's kotwal, or chief of police. Varanasi residents believe no one can stay in the city without his permission, so pilgrims visit his temple at Bhaironath when they arrive.

What is offered to Kaal Bhairav?

Common offerings are sweets such as halwa, kheer, gulgule and jalebi, part of which is then given to a dog, and dishes made from black urad dal, which are given to the poor. At the Kal Bhairav temple in Ujjain, liquor is also offered as a tantric rite, and part of it is returned to devotees as prasad.

Why is a dog associated with Kaal Bhairav?

The dog is Bhairava's vahana, or vehicle, which is why one of his names is Shvashva, "he whose mount is a dog". Images in Varanasi and elsewhere show him with a dog, and feeding a dog is a common part of his worship.

Which mantra is chanted on Kaal Bhairav Jayanti?

The simplest is "Om Kalabhairavaya Namah". Many devotees also recite the Kalabhairava Ashtakam, eight verses traditionally credited to Adi Shankaracharya, whose refrain praises Kalabhairava as lord of the city of Kashi.
