Krishna Janmashtami, also called Gokulashtami, celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna. It falls on the Ashtami tithi of the dark fortnight in Bhadrapada (Shravana in some calendars), with fasting, bhajans and worship at midnight.
Krishna Janmashtami marks the birth of Lord Krishna, revered in Hinduism as an avatar of Vishnu. According to tradition, he was born at midnight in a prison cell in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva, and was carried across the Yamuna to Gokul, where he was raised by Yashoda and Nanda.
Krishna is loved in many forms: the mischievous child who stole butter, the flute-playing cowherd of Vrindavan and the teacher of the Bhagavad Gita. The festival celebrates devotion, divine love and the victory of good over evil.
How it is marked
Many devotees fast through the day and break the fast after midnight, the hour of Krishna’s birth. Temples and homes are decorated, an image of baby Krishna is bathed and placed in a cradle, and bhajans and kirtans continue late into the night. Mathura and Vrindavan hold especially grand celebrations.
In Maharashtra, Dahi Handi is held, where teams form human pyramids to break a pot of curd hung high above the street. In parts of South India, small footprints are drawn from the doorway into the home to welcome the child Krishna.
