About Madhya Pradesh Foundation Day

Madhya Pradesh Foundation Day, or Madhya Pradesh Sthapana Diwas, marks 1 November 1956, when the States Reorganisation Act joined Madhya Bharat, Vindhya Pradesh, Bhopal State and the Hindi-speaking districts of the old Madhya Pradesh into one state, with Bhopal as its capital. In 2026 it falls on Sunday, 1 November 2026. The state government holds a festival of several days at Lal Parade Ground in Bhopal, and district headquarters run programmes of their own.

Madhya Pradesh is often called the heart of India, and on a map it sits almost exactly there. The state as people know it today was put together on 1 November 1956 from four separate units, each with its own capital, rulers and history. Its foundation day marks that joining.

How was Madhya Pradesh formed?

Madhya Pradesh was formed on 1 November 1956, the day the States Reorganisation Act came into force. Parliament had enacted the Act on 31 August 1956. It redrew India's map largely along language lines, and in the middle of the country it merged four units into one Hindi-speaking state.

The old Madhya Pradesh lost as well as gained. Its Marathi-speaking Vidarbha districts, including Nagpur, went to Bombay State, so the capital had to move. The States Reorganisation Commission had recommended Jabalpur. Bhopal was chosen instead. Sources give different reasons: some point to its central position, while others describe political pressure and credit Shankar Dayal Sharma, then Chief Minister of Bhopal State and later President of India, along with the last Nawab, Hamidullah Khan, and Jawaharlal Nehru.

Pandit Ravishankar Shukla, born in Sagar, became the first Chief Minister of the reorganised state on 1 November 1956. He died in office two months later, on 31 December 1956. Pattabhi Sitaramayya was the first Governor.

What changed in 2000?

For 44 years Madhya Pradesh was India's largest state by area. That ended on 1 November 2000, when the Madhya Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2000 carved out its eastern districts as Chhattisgarh, with Raipur as capital. Madhya Pradesh kept 230 of the 320 assembly seats and 29 of the 40 Lok Sabha seats.

The split means both states now mark their foundation day on the same date. Many families have roots on both sides, and people born in Raipur or Bilaspur before 2000 were born in Madhya Pradesh. A single 1 November message can greet both.

How is Madhya Pradesh Sthapana Diwas celebrated?

Madhya Pradesh Sthapana Diwas is celebrated as a state festival, with the main function at Lal Parade Ground in Bhopal and parallel programmes at district and divisional headquarters. The Chief Minister opens it, and the government picks a theme each year.

Recent years show the pattern. In 2024 the programme began on 30 October with an Indian Army band, a dance-drama called "Amrit Madhya Pradesh", an exhibition on the state's development, morning prabhat pheris, a cleanliness drive, rangoli competitions and the lighting of 69 lamps. In 2025, the 70th foundation day, the festival ran from 1 to 3 November under the theme "Abhyudaya Madhya Pradesh". It had a drone show on heritage and development, a stage production on Samrat Vikramaditya, tribal and folk dance, a crafts fair built around the Ek Jila Ek Utpad scheme, and a fair of regional food.

Whether offices close depends on that year's notification from the state's General Administration Department. For the 70th anniversary in 2025, the government declared 1 November a public holiday. The Prime Minister usually posts greetings that morning to all the states formed on 1 November.

What makes Madhya Pradesh distinct?

Madhya Pradesh is less one culture than several regions sharing a border. Malwa around Indore and Ujjain, Nimar along the Narmada, Bundelkhand around Sagar and Chhatarpur, Baghelkhand around Rewa, Mahakoshal around Jabalpur and the Gwalior-Chambal belt each have their own speech and food. Hindi is the official language, but the 2011 census also counts large numbers of Malvi, Bundeli, Bagheli, Nimadi, Bhili and Gondi speakers. About 21 per cent of the population, roughly 1.53 crore people, belong to Scheduled Tribes, and the state recognises 46 tribal communities.

The state's three UNESCO World Heritage Sites span a long stretch of time: the rock shelters of Bhimbetka, the Buddhist monuments at Sanchi and the temples of Khajuraho. Ujjain on the Shipra hosts the Simhastha Kumbh every 12 years. The Narmada, the longest river in the state, runs west between the Vindhya and Satpura ranges and is held sacred along its banks.

Wildlife is a point of pride. Madhya Pradesh kept its "Tiger State" title in the 2022 tiger estimate with 785 tigers, ahead of Karnataka's 563, and Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Panna and Satpura are its best-known reserves. The state animal is the barasingha, a swamp deer, and the state bird is the Indian paradise flycatcher.

Food changes by region. Indore eats poha with jalebi for breakfast and bhutte ka kees, grated corn cooked with milk and spices, in the evening. Dal bafla, wheat dough balls boiled, baked and dipped in ghee, is a Malwa favourite, close to the dal baati of Rajasthan. Bhopal is known for its kebabs, korma and biryani, and for paan finished with rose-petal preserve. Mawa bati and malpua are common sweets.

How do you wish someone on Madhya Pradesh Foundation Day?

The standard Hindi wish is "Madhya Pradesh Sthapana Diwas ki hardik shubhkamnayein", heartfelt wishes on Madhya Pradesh Foundation Day. Name a real place, river or dish and the message stops sounding like a forward. The state song, "Mera Madhya Pradesh", written and composed by Mahesh Shrivastava and adopted in 2010, is a good source of imagery.

For parents back home
Happy MP Foundation Day, Mummy-Papa. Have a plate of poha-jalebi for me this morning, and send me a photo if the town lights up tonight. Calling you after lunch.

Madhya Pradesh shares its birthday with several states: Karnataka Rajyotsava and Kerala Piravi, also created by the 1956 Act, and Haryana Day and Punjab Day, from the reorganisation of Punjab in 1966. See the calendar for 2026 for the other state days.

How to wish someone on Madhya Pradesh Foundation Day

A Madhya Pradesh Foundation Day wish is about the place and its people: the Narmada, the forests and tigers, the food of Malwa, the towns of Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand, Bhopal and Indore. Hindi suits most people from the state, and a message that names a real hometown, river or dish reads better than a slogan. Keep party politics out, since each government sets its own theme for the day, and remember that Chhattisgarh shared this birthday until 2000.
