About Mauni Amavasya

Mauni Amavasya is the new moon of the Hindu month of Magha, when millions bathe at the Sangam in Prayagraj and in the Ganga elsewhere, and many keep a vow of silence for the day. In 2027 it falls on Saturday, 6 February 2027. It is the largest bathing day of the annual Magh Mela, and in Kumbh years the largest of the whole fair.

Before dawn on Mauni Amavasya, the roads into Prayagraj are full of people walking towards the Sangam, where the Ganga meets the Yamuna and, by tradition, the hidden Saraswati. Many of them have not spoken since they woke up, and some will not speak until the next morning. Mauni means silent, and silence is the point of the day.

What the day is

Mauni Amavasya is the Amavasya, the new moon, of the month of Magha in the north Indian calendar. Magha is the holiest month for river bathing in the Hindu year, and its new moon is thought the holiest day of the month. The name comes from mauna, silence, and the word sits close to muni, a sage who has taken a vow of silence.

The tradition holds that a dip in a sacred river on this day washes away sins, and that keeping quiet restrains the mind and turns the day inward. People also remember their ancestors: they light a ghee lamp, offer water in pitru tarpan, feed those in need, and avoid quarrels, lies and harsh words.

The Magh Mela and the main snan

Every year, in the month of Magha, a temporary city of tents rises on the sandbanks at the Sangam for the Magh Mela. The fair runs for about six weeks, from Paush Purnima to Maha Shivaratri, with six main bathing days. In 2026 it covered about 800 hectares, and the state expected 12 to 15 crore visitors over the season. Mauni Amavasya draws the largest crowd of any single day.

In January 2026 it was the third major bath of that year's Magh Mela. The administration expected about three crore people at the Sangam on the day, after about 1.5 crore had bathed on the day before. It built more than 3 km of bathing ghats and pontoon bridges, and seers from many akharas, including the Kinnar Akhara, went into the water. People also bathed at ghats in Varanasi, Ayodhya, Kanpur and Mirzapur.

Some of the people at the Mela have been there for the whole month. They are kalpvasis, pilgrims who keep kalpavas: a month (or 5, 11 or 21 days, as strength allows) of living in a tent by the river, bathing before sunrise, eating simple food without onion or garlic, and spending the day in prayer. The state put their number at 20 to 25 lakh in 2026. For them Mauni Amavasya is the high point of the stay.

The day also matters at the other Kumbh cities. Haridwar holds an Ardh Kumbh from 14 January to 20 April 2027, and the Uttarakhand government, after meeting the 13 akharas, listed Mauni Amavasya as the second of its ten bathing days, between Makar Sankranti and Vasant Panchami.

How people keep the day at home

Most people who mark Mauni Amavasya never go near the Sangam. They bathe early at home, sometimes adding a little Ganga water to the bucket, offer water to the sun and pray. Many fast or eat only once.

The vow of silence takes different forms. Some keep it for the whole day. Others stay silent only until the bath and puja are done. Some use the quiet for japa, the Gayatri mantra or reading the Bhagavad Gita. Feeding Brahmins and giving to the poor are counted as especially meritorious on this day.

The date follows the tithi. The Amavasya can begin on the evening of one day and end on the evening of the next, so families take the day on which it runs through sunrise, as listed in the local panchang.

What to write

The person you are wishing may not reply until evening, and that is a good sign, not a snub. Send a text they can read later rather than calling. Short, calm lines about bathing, silence and ancestors fit the day. For someone on their way to the Sangam, a wish for a safe journey matters more than anything else.

For parents at the Magh Mela
Pranam, Maa and Papa. May your snan at the Sangam be peaceful and your kalpavas complete well. Please stay with the group and call me once you're back at the tent.
For a friend keeping silence
No need to reply. Wishing you a calm and quiet Mauni Amavasya, and a mind as still as the river at dawn.
For grandparents
Shubh Mauni Amavasya, Dadi. May the ancestors bless our family, and may your prayers today keep us all safe.
For a colleague
Wishing you and your family a peaceful Mauni Amavasya. May the holy dip bring you good health and clarity.
For someone travelling to Prayagraj
Have a safe journey to the Sangam. Go early, keep your phone charged, and keep everyone together. Har Har Gange.
For a friend far from home
Shubh Mauni Amavasya. Even if the Ganga is far away this year, may a quiet morning and a lamp for the ancestors bring you the same peace.
In Hindi
Mauni Amavasya ki shubhkamnayein. Maun se man shant ho, aur Ganga snan se jeevan pavitra ho. (Good wishes on Mauni Amavasya. May silence calm your mind and the Ganga bath make life pure.)

The next big bathing days of the Magh Mela are Vasant Panchami and Maghi Purnima, and the fair closes on Maha Shivaratri.

How to wish someone on Mauni Amavasya

Mauni Amavasya is a quiet day, so a good wish is quiet too. It wishes the person a peaceful snan, a calm mind and blessings for the family's ancestors. Text rather than call, since the person may be keeping silence. For someone heading to the Sangam, add a word about staying safe in the crowd. Avoid party words; "shubh" and "punya" fit better than "happy".

Why is Mauni Amavasya important at the Magh Mela?

Mauni Amavasya is the biggest bathing day of the Magh Mela at Prayagraj, and of the Kumbh Mela in Kumbh years. Crores of people bathe at the Sangam of the Ganga and Yamuna that day, believing a dip on the holiest new moon of Magha washes away sins.

What should you not do on Mauni Amavasya?

People who keep the day avoid quarrels, lies and harsh words, and many avoid speaking at all until their bath and prayers are over. Many also fast for the day or eat only simple food.

Can you keep Mauni Amavasya without going to the Ganga?

Yes. Most people who keep the day bathe at home before sunrise, often with a few drops of Ganga water added, then pray, remember their ancestors with a lamp and water offering, and give food or clothes to someone in need.

How do you wish someone who is keeping silence?

Send a short text instead of calling, and tell them they need not reply. A line such as "Wishing you a peaceful Mauni Amavasya and a calm, quiet day" suits the mood of the day better than "Happy Mauni Amavasya".
