5 Sept Festival Odia (Hindu and Adivasi) Western Odisha

About Nuakhai

Nuakhai is the new-rice festival of Western Odisha, when families first offer the season's paddy to their deity and then eat it together. It falls on Bhadrapada Shukla Panchami, the day after Ganesh Chaturthi; in 2027 that is Sunday, 5 September 2027. The hour of the offering is fixed by priests for Maa Samaleswari in Sambalpur, and the day ends with Nuakhai Juhar to elders and Bhetghat visits.

Nua means new and khai means eat. Nuakhai is the day a family eats the new rice of the season for the first time, and only after it has been offered to the goddess. It belongs to Western Odisha: Sambalpur, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Deogarh and Sundargarh. It is also kept across the border in parts of Chhattisgarh and in Simdega in Jharkhand. Coastal Odisha keeps its own new-rice rite, Nabanna, instead.

Oral tradition credits Ramai Deva, the 14th-century Chauhan king who founded Patna state at Patnagarh, with making Nuakhai a mark of Sambalpuri identity. The rite itself is far older, rooted in the harvest offerings farmers have long made before eating the first grain.

Bhadrapada comes early in the paddy season, before most fields are cut, so families have to go looking for the first ripe ears in time for the offering. That search for new paddy is one of the named steps of the festival.

How the date and the lagna are fixed

Nuakhai falls on Bhadrapada Shukla Panchami, the fifth day of the bright half of Bhadrapada, the day after Ganesh Chaturthi. It usually lands in late August or September.

For a long time each village or family chose its own day. An attempt in the 1960s to set a common date did not hold. In 1991 the date was fixed as Bhadraba Shukla Panchami, and the Odisha government later made it a state holiday. In some recent years the state has given a second day off as well.

The exact hour, the lagna, is the part people wait for. Priests and astrologers of Sambalpur work it out from the zodiac sign and constellation of Maa Samaleswari, the city's presiding goddess. They announce it a week or so ahead at a temple meeting and carry it in procession to the Samaleswari temple. The window is short, usually under half an hour on the festival morning. The nabanna, the new-rice offering, goes to the goddess first, and households across the region time their own offering to follow it. The lagna changes every year, so watch the local news for it.

The nine steps

Preparations start about two weeks ahead, and people in Western Odisha still count them as nine stages.

  1. Beheren
    The gathering

Villagers meet to discuss the festival and its date

  2. Lagna dekha
    Fixing the hour

Priests work out the auspicious time for the offering

  3. Daka haka
    Invitations

Relatives, including married daughters, are called home

  4. Sapha sutura, lipa puchha
    Cleaning

Houses are swept, washed and plastered with fresh clay

  5. Ghina bika
    Shopping

New clothes, often Sambalpuri handloom, and puja items are bought

  6. Nua dhan khuja
    Finding the new paddy

The first ears of the new crop are gathered from the field

  7. Bali paka
    Final check

The last arrangements are reviewed the day before

  8. Nuakhai
    The offering and meal

New rice goes to the deity at the lagna, then the family eats together

  9. Juhar bhet
    Greeting elders

Younger people touch elders' feet and receive their blessing

The day itself

Everyone wears new clothes. At the appointed time the eldest member of the family offers the new rice to the household deity and then hands it out to the rest of the family. Only then does everyone sit down to eat the new harvest together, and for families with members working in other states, this is the meal they travel home for.

Arisa pitha is the dish everyone links with Nuakhai: a deep-fried cake of rice flour and jaggery. Kheer, khichdi, other pithas and ambil, a sour dish, also turn up, depending on the household.

Then comes Nuakhai Juhar. Children and younger adults bow and touch the feet of parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts, who bless them. Juhar is the respectful greeting of the region, and on this day it carries an extra meaning: old quarrels are meant to be dropped. Through the evening people walk over to relatives and friends, and towns hold Nuakhai Bhetghat, a meeting with music and Sambalpuri dance such as Rasarkeli, Dalkhai, Maelajada and Sajani.

Western Odisha has sent workers all over India, and they keep the festival where they live. Associations in Delhi, Surat, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru organise their own Bhetghat. For many, though, Nuakhai is the one day in the year they try hardest to get home.

Similar first-grain rites are kept by Adivasi communities in the same belt: Nawakhani among the Oraon and Jom Nawa among the Munda and Santal. Odisha's other big festivals, Raja Parba and Utkal Divas, belong more to the coast and the whole state.

How to wish someone on Nuakhai

A Nuakhai wish is about the new rice, the family meal and respect for elders. "Nuakhai Juhar" is the greeting itself, said with folded hands or while touching an elder's feet. For someone from Sambalpur, Bargarh or Bolangir who is working far away, acknowledge that they may be missing the meal at home. Mention Maa Samaleswari, the arisa pitha or the evening Bhetghat if you know them. Keep it warm and simple.
