Bhai Dooj 2026 falls on Wednesday 11 November in India, and the tilak is done in the afternoon. A good Bhai Dooj wish names one thing your sibling did for you this year and says when you will see them next. Below are messages both ways, in English and Hindi, and the regional names.

Bhai Dooj is the last of the five days of Diwali. A sister puts a tilak on her brother's forehead, does his aarti, feeds him, and prays for his long life. He comes to her home for it, eats a full meal and leaves a gift. It is a smaller, quieter day than Raksha Bandhan, and for many families it means more for that reason.

Is Bhai Dooj on 10 or 11 November 2026?

Bhai Dooj is on Wednesday 11 November 2026 for almost all of India and Nepal. You will see 10 November on some websites and calendars, and here is why.

Bhai Dooj is kept on Dwitiya, the second lunar day after the Diwali new moon. Lunar days do not line up with calendar days. In 2026, Dwitiya starts at about 2:00 pm on Tuesday 10 November and ends at about 3:53 pm on Wednesday 11 November (India time).

The tilak belongs in aparahna, the afternoon window. On Wednesday the 11th, Dwitiya is already running at sunrise and lasts through the whole afternoon window. On Tuesday the 10th, it starts in the middle of that window. So the Indian panchangs pick Wednesday. Calendars that show the 10th are counting from the moment the tithi begins.

There is one real exception. West of India the times shift, and a panchang set to a Gulf city such as Abu Dhabi puts Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November, because there Dwitiya starts at about 12:30 pm local time, before the afternoon window opens, and covers all of it. If your sibling lives abroad, check a panchang for their city.

Bhai Dooj wishes from a sister to her brother

The best ones sound like you actually talk. Siblings rarely say the serious thing out loud, so a festival message is a good place to slip it in.

To an elder brother
Happy Bhai Dooj, bhaiya. You stopped telling me what to do somewhere around my twenties, and started just turning up when I needed you. I noticed. Come early, lunch is at one.
To a younger brother
Happy Bhai Dooj to the boy who used to steal my pencils and now fixes my laptop. Still annoying. Still mine. Tilak at 2, don't be late, the food won't wait.
To a brother far away
Happy Bhai Dooj! Your thali is ready and your chair is empty. I'll do your tilak on video at 1:30, so keep your phone charged and your forehead camera-ready.
To a brother who had a hard year
Happy Bhai Dooj. This year was heavy for you, and you still checked on everyone else. Today it's my turn to pray for you. Come home and eat properly.
To a brother who just got married
Happy first Bhai Dooj as a married man! Bring bhabhi along. She gets the good sweets now, sorry, that's the rule.
To a cousin brother
Happy Bhai Dooj! Cousin on paper, brother in every way that counts. Every summer holiday I remember has you in it.

Bhai Dooj wishes from a brother to his sister

Bhai Dooj is the sister's day to pray for you, which makes it a good day to tell her what she means. A brother's message can be as simple as a thank-you and a time you'll arrive.

To an elder sister
Happy Bhai Dooj, didi. You've been praying for my long life for thirty years, and I'm still here, so it's working. Thank you for everything you never mention. On my way.
To a younger sister
Happy Bhai Dooj, chhoti. I'll sit still for the tilak this year, promise. Tell me what you want, and no, I'm not guessing again after last year's mistake.
To a sister who lives far away
Happy Bhai Dooj. I can't sit on your chowki this year, but the gift is on its way and I'll call at tilak time. Save me a plate. Next year, in person.
To a married sister
Happy Bhai Dooj! Coming over for my annual free lunch. Tell everyone at yours I'm bringing sweets so they let me in.
To a sister going through something
Happy Bhai Dooj, didi. You've looked after everyone for so long. Whatever you need this year, ask me first. That's my side of the tilak.
To a cousin sister
Happy Bhai Dooj! You've done more sister duty than most real sisters, and I've never once thanked you for it. So, thank you.

Bhai Dooj wishes in Hindi

A line in Hindi often feels closer to home than English, especially to parents and grandparents reading over your sibling's shoulder. Here they are in Devanagari, followed by a few in Hinglish for WhatsApp.

Hinglish, sister to brother
Happy Bhai Dooj, bhaiya! Tilak ki thali ready hai aur tumhari favourite kheer bhi. Bas time pe aa jaana, is baar wait nahi karungi.
Hinglish, brother to sister
Bhai Dooj ki dher saari shubhkamnayein, didi. Gift aa raha hai, aur main bhi. Khana bacha ke rakhna.

Bhau Beej, Bhai Phonta, Bhai Tika: the same day, different names

Bhai Dooj has a different name and a slightly different ritual in almost every region. Using the right name is the easiest way to make a message feel personal.

If you can't be there for the tilak

Plenty of siblings live in different cities or countries now. The custom already makes room for that.

  1. Send the gift earlyCouriers slow down in Diwali week. If the gift is going by post, send it by early November so it arrives before Wednesday 11 November.
  2. Fix a time for a video callPick a time in your sibling's afternoon window and tell them in advance, so they are not in a meeting. The tilak on screen still counts.
  3. Send a message in the morningA message at breakfast tells them you remembered before the day got busy. Send the longer one at tilak time.
  4. Use the moon if there is no brotherIn parts of Haryana and Maharashtra, a sister with no brother nearby does the tilak and aarti to the moon. Cousins and close family friends also count as siblings almost everywhere.

What to avoid in a Bhai Dooj message

Do

  • Mention one real memory. "The year you drove me to my exam" beats "you are the best brother in the world".
  • Include cousins, step-siblings and chosen siblings. The festival has always been generous about who counts.
  • Send it in the morning if you can't visit, so it doesn't look like an afterthought.
  • Use the regional name your sibling grew up with.

Avoid

  • Don't make the gift the point, in public. Money given on Bhai Dooj is private between the two of you.
  • Don't send a festive message to a family that has lost a brother or sister this year. Many families don't celebrate at all in that year. A quiet "thinking of you today" is better.
  • Don't tell a sister without a brother that she is missing out. The custom already has an answer for her.
  • Don't forward the same picture to every sibling in the family group. Write each one a line of their own.

For the story behind the day, the rituals step by step and how it differs from Raksha Bandhan, see the Bhai Dooj page. For the other sibling festival in the year, there are Raksha Bandhan wishes. Bhai Dooj closes the week that starts with Dhanteras and Diwali, and if your sibling is far away this year, miss-you messages may say the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bhai Dooj on 10 or 11 November 2026?

In India and Nepal, Bhai Dooj is on Wednesday 11 November 2026. Dwitiya, the lunar day it is kept on, starts at about 2:00 pm on 10 November and runs until about 3:53 pm on 11 November, so the full afternoon tilak window falls on the 11th. Some calendars show the 10th because the tithi begins then, and panchangs for Gulf cities give the 10th.

What time should the Bhai Dooj tilak be done in 2026?

Most panchangs place the tilak in aparahna, the afternoon window, which on 11 November 2026 runs from about 1:10 pm to 3:20 pm in Delhi and 1:30 pm to 3:46 pm in Mumbai. In Bengal, Bhai Phonta is usually done in the morning. Check a panchang for your own city.

What should I write to my brother on Bhai Dooj?

Name one thing he did for you this year, say that you are praying for his health, and tell him when to come. For example: "Happy Bhai Dooj, bhaiya. You turned up every time I needed you this year. Come early, lunch is at one." Specific beats grand.

What can a brother write to his sister on Bhai Dooj?

Thank her for something she does that nobody mentions, and tell her she can count on you. Bhai Dooj is the day she prays for your long life, so a short, honest thank-you from you lands well, followed by the time you will arrive.

How do you wish Bhai Dooj in Hindi?

"भाई दूज की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएं" (Bhai Dooj ki hardik shubhkamnayein) is the standard greeting. Add a personal line after it, such as "हमेशा स्वस्थ और खुश रहो" (always stay healthy and happy), so it reads like a message and not a forward.

What is the difference between Bhau Beej, Bhai Phonta and Bhai Tika?

They are regional names for the same day. Bhau Beej is the Marathi name, used in Maharashtra and Goa. Bhai Phonta is Bengali; the sister fasts until she marks her brother's forehead with sandalwood, curd and kajal. Bhai Tika is Nepali, with a seven-coloured tika on the last day of Tihar.

What if my sibling and I can't meet on Bhai Dooj?

Send any gift early so it arrives before the day, fix a time for a video call in their afternoon, and send a short message in the morning. Many families do the tilak on screen now. In some regions a sister with no brother nearby does the tilak to the moon instead.

What is a Kehdoo Bhai Dooj card?

It's a short animated greeting page for "Best Wishes". Write or pick a message, add a photo if you want, and Kehdoo turns it into a shareable card at a single link.

Don't let the words sit inside.
