A last working day card gathers the team's goodbye messages before a colleague leaves. Start collecting wishes ahead of the final day, set a clear signing deadline and share the finished card at a suitable moment. The card can reach people who cannot join the leaving lunch or call.
When should you start a last working day card?
Start once the departure is public and you know who should be invited. For a small team, a few working days may be enough. A larger group or one spread across time zones may need longer. These are planning suggestions, not fixed etiquette rules: the right deadline is one your group can realistically meet.
If the farewell is tomorrow, create the card now, send one direct invitation and give an exact cutoff. A small collection of thoughtful messages is better than postponing the goodbye because the card is not crowded enough.
What belongs in the invitation to sign?
Include the recipient's name, the contribution link, the signing deadline and the planned presentation time. Use a calendar date and time zone instead of "tomorrow evening" when the group works internationally. Tell contributors whether the tone should be warm, funny or formal.
Suggested invitation: "We're making a goodbye card for Alex. Please add a short memory or message by Thursday, 29 October, at 2 pm Dubai time. We'll share it at Friday's team farewell." Replace the example details with your real plan before sending.
What is a good last working day message?
"It won't feel quite the same without you here. Thank you for the patience, perspective and laughs. Wishing you a next chapter that feels right for you." Add one true detail to make this starting point your own.
Avoid treating the card like a handover document. Project ownership, equipment returns and access arrangements belong elsewhere. This is a place for the human part of leaving. If the departure is sensitive, keep the wording respectful and avoid jokes about escaping the company.
Should the card have a countdown?
The boarding pass theme can show a last-working-day date and countdown. Choose it when the travel idea fits. A newspaper design can instead frame the occasion as a special farewell edition, while letters or minimal notes suit quieter goodbyes.
What should you check before sending?
Check the spelling of the recipient's name, the group label and any personal introduction. Confirm that expected contributors have had a chance to sign. Review photos for suitability, close writing and share the recipient link at the agreed time. Do not paste the signing link as the finished gift.
After the presentation, let the recipient browse at their own pace. A group card holds more than can be comfortably read aloud during a short meeting. For wording, browse the farewell messages; for the collection process, use the colleague card guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can we make a farewell card on the last working day itself?
Yes. Set a short but explicit deadline, send the contribution link directly to the group and check the card before delivery. Do not promise a large collection if there is little time.
Is a last working day card a resignation letter?
No. A resignation letter formally communicates an employee's decision to leave. A last working day card is a personal goodbye from colleagues or friends.
Does every theme show the last-day countdown?
No. The date and countdown are part of the boarding pass design. Other themes focus on letters, memories or a simpler presentation.
