About Dahi Handi

Dahi Handi is the pot-breaking festival held the day after Krishna Janmashtami, mostly in Maharashtra and Goa, where teams of govindas build human pyramids to reach a pot of curd hung high above the street. In 2027 it falls on Thursday, 26 August 2027. In Maharashtra the day is also Gopalkala, named after a mixed dish of poha and curd shared as Krishna's prasad.

Dahi means curd and handi is the clay pot it is kept in. The festival retells a story from Krishna's childhood in Gokul. As the tradition tells it, the boy Krishna and his cowherd friends kept raiding the neighbours' butter and curd, so the women hung the pots from the roof beams out of reach. The boys climbed on each other's shoulders and broke them anyway. It earned Krishna the name Makhan Chor, the butter thief.

In Maharashtra the day after Janmashtami is called Gopalkala. Gopal is the cowherd, and kala means mixing together. Gopalkala is also a dish: poha, puffed rice and puffed jowar, curd, buttermilk, soaked chana dal, pickle, sugar and pieces of fruit, all stirred together and shared as prasad, the way Krishna shared his food with his friends. The Varkari pilgrimage ends with a gopalkala too, and the dish is served after kala kirtans.

How the towers go up

A pathak or mandal is a team of govindas, usually from one chawl, lane or neighbourhood. Teams practise for weeks in the evenings before the festival. On the day they travel by truck from one handi to the next across Mumbai, Thane and Pune.

  1. The baseThe heaviest members lock arms in a ring, with more rings around them to take the weight and to catch anyone who falls.
  2. The middle tiersEach tier stands on the shoulders of the one below. The higher you go, the fewer and lighter the climbers.
  3. The topThe lightest climber, often a child, goes up last and breaks the pot with a fist or a coconut.
  4. The chantThe crowd and the team keep up "Govinda ala re", while people on balconies throw water at the climbers to make it harder.
  5. The attemptsA team usually gets three tries. If the tower collapses, it rebuilds or moves on to the next handi.

Pots can hold curd, butter, milk, fruit and sometimes cash. Big organisers, many backed by political parties, hang prize money that runs into lakhs. Most towers have fewer than nine tiers. In 2012 the Jai Jawan Govinda Pathak of Jogeshwari built a nine-tier pyramid 43.79 feet high in Thane, which entered the Guinness World Records. Mazgaon, where the oldest pathaks practise, is known as Dahi Handi chi Pandhari.

The custom is not only Marathi. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana it is called Utlotsavam, and at the Tirumala temple a prize is tied to the top of a 25-foot pole smeared with something slippery, to be won by climbing.

The safety rules

Falls from the upper tiers cause head, spine and neck injuries. In 2012 more than 225 govindas were hurt and one died, and doctors writing in the Journal of Postgraduate Medicine called for lower pots, no children and safety gear. The rules since then have changed more than once.

  1. 2014
    Bombay High Court sets limits

Govindas must be at least 18, and towers no higher than 20 feet

  2. 2016
    Supreme Court keeps the limits

The 18-year age and 20-foot height caps stay in force for that year

  3. 7 August 2017
    Bombay High Court changes course

A bench of Justices B.R. Gavai and M.S. Karnik accepts the state's minimum age of 14, drops the height cap and leaves the rules to the legislature

  4. August 2022
    Adventure sport status

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announces Dahi Handi as an adventure sport, with govindas eligible for the sports quota in jobs and ₹10 lakh cover for a death

  5. 2026
    State-paid insurance

Cover for 1.6 lakh registered govindas, a premium of up to ₹75 each paid from the State Sports Development Fund

Under the 2026 scheme, a death or permanent total disability pays ₹10 lakh, the loss of a hand, leg or eye pays ₹5 lakh, and hospital costs are covered up to ₹1 lakh. Govindas are registered and verified through the Maharashtra State Govinda Association, and only those who meet the age rule and have attended practice are covered.

How the date is set

Dahi Handi follows Janmashtami, which is fixed to the Ashtami of the dark fortnight of Bhadrapada (Shravana in western and southern calendars), the night Krishna is said to have been born. Most years that puts Dahi Handi in late August or early September. When almanacs disagree about Janmashtami, Dahi Handi moves with the date Maharashtra keeps, so check the local calendar rather than a North Indian one. Ganesh Chaturthi comes about ten days later, and some pathaks grew out of the same neighbourhood mandals that put up Ganesh pandals.

To a govinda friend
Happy Dahi Handi. Seven thar this year, I hear. Climb steady, land soft, and I'll be at the bottom of the lane with vada pav once the handi breaks.
To your son in the pathak
Proud of you, beta. Wear the helmet, listen to your captain, and call Aai after every handi. Govinda ala re.
To family
Happy Gopalkala. Aaji's kala is ready: poha, dahi, chana dal and the raw mango pickle you all fight over. Come before the pathaks take over the road.
To a colleague
Happy Dahi Handi. Hope your lane's handi breaks on the first try and the traffic lets you home by evening.
To a friend away from Mumbai
Happy Dahi Handi. The trucks went past our building at seven, drums and all. Thane isn't the same without you shouting from the balcony.
In Marathi
Gopalkalyachya hardik shubhechha. Govinda ala re ala! (Warm wishes on Gopalkala. Govinda has come!)
In Hindi
Dahi Handi ki shubhkamnayein. Kanha ka makhan aapke ghar mein mithaas aur hansi bhar de. (Dahi Handi wishes. May Krishna's butter fill your home with sweetness and laughter.)

How to wish someone on Dahi Handi

A Dahi Handi wish has the cheer of the street: the chant of "Govinda ala re", the water thrown from balconies, the team's practice. For someone who climbs, the best wish is also a safe one: a good climb and a safe landing. For family, wish them on Gopalkala and the shared prasad. "Gopalkalyachya hardik shubhechha" is the Marathi greeting. Keep it light, but don't joke about falls; govindas get badly hurt every year.

Dahi Handi 2027 falls on Thursday, 26 August 2027.

What is Gopalkala?

Gopalkala is the Maharashtrian name for the day after Janmashtami and for the dish shared that day: poha, puffed rice, curd, buttermilk, soaked chana dal, pickle, sugar and fruit mixed together. "Kala" means mixing, and the dish recalls Krishna sharing his food with the cowherd boys.

What is the minimum age for govindas in Maharashtra?

Children below 14 may not take part as govindas. The Bombay High Court accepted that limit in August 2017, replacing its earlier 18-year rule, and Maharashtra's insurance scheme covers only govindas who meet the age rule.

Is Dahi Handi an official sport in Maharashtra?

Yes. In August 2022 Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced adventure sport status for Dahi Handi, which makes govindas eligible for the sports quota, and the state now pays for insurance cover of up to ₹10 lakh for registered govindas.

Say "Gopalkalyachya hardik shubhechha", which means warm wishes on Gopalkala. Many people add the festival cry "Govinda ala re ala", meaning Govinda has come.
