About Vivah Panchami

Vivah Panchami is the day Hindus mark the wedding of Ram and Sita, on the fifth day of the bright half of Margashirsha. In 2026 it falls on Monday, 14 December 2026. It is kept most widely in Janakpur in Nepal, in Ayodhya, and in the Mithila region of Bihar, where Sita is remembered as a daughter of the land.

The Ramayana tells the story in its first book. King Janaka of Mithila had a bow that once belonged to Shiva, so heavy that no visiting king could lift it, and he promised Sita to whoever could string it. Rama, then a young prince travelling with the sage Vishvamitra, lifted the bow and broke it while drawing the string. A message went to Ayodhya, King Dasharatha came with the wedding party, and the brothers married on the same occasion: Rama to Sita, Lakshmana to Urmila, Bharata to Mandavi and Shatrughna to Shrutakirti.

Tulsidas, retelling the story in Awadhi in the Ramcharitmanas, sets the wedding in the cold season and the month of Agahan, the everyday name for Margashirsha. He also puts the ceremony at godhuli, the dusk hour when cattle come home and raise dust on the road.

Mangal mool lagan dinu aava. Him ritu agahanu maasu suhaava. The auspicious wedding day arrived, in winter, in the lovely month of Agahan.

Tulsidas, Ramcharitmanas, Bal Kand (before doha 312)

Neither text names the fifth day of the bright fortnight. That date comes from the festival calendars, which have kept Margashirsha Shukla Panchami as the anniversary for generations. Because it follows the moon, it moves between late November and mid-December on the Gregorian calendar.

Janakpur, Ayodhya and Mithila

Janakpur, now in Nepal's Madhesh Province, is identified with Janaka's capital, and it holds the largest celebration. The run-up lasts about a week, with pilgrims from both Nepal and India. Groups bring a barat in Rama's name from the Ayodhya side, and the festival images of Ram and Sita are taken out of the Janaki Mandir, dressed in wedding jewellery and married by Hindu rites on Panchami. Ayodhya answers with its own ceremonies in the city's Ram temples.

PlaceWhat happens
Janakpur, NepalA week of events ending on Panchami: a re-enactment of the breaking of the bow at Barabiga Maidan, Mithila wedding rites such as matkor, the wedding of the temple images, and a procession around the city with Ram and Sita on a decorated chariot.
Ayodhya, Uttar PradeshWedding ceremonies in Rama's temples, with readings of the wedding chapter. In 2025 the flag was raised over the Ram Janmabhoomi temple on Vivah Panchami to mark the end of its construction.
Mithila, in Bihar and NepalSita is remembered as a daughter of the region, so families keep the wedding almost as their own. Many homes fast and hold a small wedding puja in the evening.
Homes elsewhere in north IndiaA fast, a puja for Ram and Sita together, and a reading of the wedding episode from the Ramcharitmanas.

At home the puja is simple. Many people fast through the day. Images of Ram and Sita are bathed and worshipped together as a couple, with flowers and sweets, and the family reads or listens to the wedding chapter. The symbolic wedding is usually held in the evening, which fits Tulsidas's dusk-hour ceremony.

Why some families won't hold a wedding on this day

This surprises people. Vivah Panchami is the most famous wedding day in Hindu tradition, and some panchangs treat it as an abujh muhurat, a day so auspicious that no further muhurat needs to be checked. Yet many families, particularly in Mithila, will not marry a daughter on it.

The reason they give is what came after the wedding in the story: fourteen years of exile, Sita's abduction by Ravana, a public test of her purity, and her later banishment from Ayodhya. A daughter, the thinking goes, should not be sent off on a day tied to so much hardship. For the same reason some homes stop the Ramcharitmanas reading at the wedding itself and do not carry it on into the exile.

Other families see no problem and do choose the date, and the custom is not laid down in any scripture. If someone you know is planning a wedding, ask what their family follows before suggesting this date.

What to write

Think of it as a wedding-anniversary greeting for a couple the whole family loves. Name something they actually do: the evening puja, the fast, the wedding songs, a trip to Janakpur or Ayodhya. For Maithili speakers, "Siya" and "Siya-Ram" carry more warmth than the formal Sita-Rama.

Do

  • For a couple, tie the day to their own marriage. Wish them the companionship the story celebrates.
  • For a Maithili family, mention the songs, or Janakpur, or Sita as Mithila's daughter.
  • Keep your wish devotional and personal. Leave out slogans and temple politics.

Avoid

  • Don't suggest a young couple fix their wedding on Vivah Panchami without checking. Many families avoid it.
  • Don't write it off as a story only for the faithful in a mixed group. For many Hindus it is a living anniversary.

The day sits in the same cool months as the start of the Hindu wedding season, which opens after Dev Uthani Ekadashi and Tulsi Vivah. Rama's birth is marked separately on Ram Navami in spring. If you are writing to a couple whose own anniversary is near, a wedding anniversary card can carry both.

To parents
Pranam, Ma and Papa. Siya-Ram's wedding day today. May the house stay as full of song tonight as it was for every wedding we've had in it.
To a couple
Happy Vivah Panchami to you both. Ram and Sita's story is about standing by each other through every exile. Wishing you that, and much easier years.
To a Maithili friend
Today Mithila marries its daughter again. Wishing your family a lovely evening puja, the old songs, and Siya's blessings on your home.
To someone in Janakpur or Ayodhya
Wishing you a good darshan of the wedding. Do send photos of the procession and the Janaki Mandir lit up.
To a colleague
Wishing you and your family a peaceful Vivah Panchami. Hope the evening puja goes well.
In Hindi
Siya-Ram vivah ki aapko aur aapke parivar ko hardik shubhkamnayein. (Warm wishes to you and your family on the wedding of Siya and Ram.)

How to wish someone on Vivah Panchami

A Vivah Panchami wish is a wedding-anniversary wish for Ram and Sita, sent to a family. It works best when it mentions something real: the evening puja, the reading of the wedding chapter, a trip to Janakpur or Ayodhya. In Mithila homes Sita is spoken of as a daughter, so a warm line about Siya and her family lands well. Keep it devotional for elders, and don't press a couple to fix their own wedding on this date, since many families avoid it.

Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.

Why do some people not marry on Vivah Panchami?

Many families, especially in Mithila, avoid marrying a daughter on Vivah Panchami because Sita's married life brought exile, abduction and separation. The custom is a regional belief rather than a scriptural rule, and some families do choose the date because panchangs count it as highly auspicious.

Where is Vivah Panchami celebrated the most?

Vivah Panchami is celebrated on the largest scale in Janakpur in Nepal, the city identified with King Janaka's capital, where a week of events ends with the wedding of the Ram and Sita images at the Janaki Mandir. Ayodhya and the Mithila region of Bihar also mark it widely.

In which month did Ram and Sita marry?

In the Ramcharitmanas, Tulsidas places Ram and Sita's wedding in the month of Agahan, also called Margashirsha, in the cold season, at the dusk hour of godhuli. Festival calendars keep the anniversary on the fifth day of the bright half of that month.

What is done on Vivah Panchami at home?

On Vivah Panchami many Hindus fast, worship images of Ram and Sita together as a married couple, and read or listen to the wedding chapter of the Ramcharitmanas. The main puja is usually held in the evening, and many homes hold a small symbolic wedding.

What is a good Vivah Panchami message for a married couple?

A good Vivah Panchami message for a couple links Ram and Sita's wedding to their own marriage, for example by wishing them the same loyalty and companionship through hard times. Keep it warm and personal rather than a long scripture quote.
