About Dev Uthani Ekadashi

Dev Uthani Ekadashi, also called Prabodhini Ekadashi, is the eleventh day of the bright half of Kartik, and in 2026 it falls on Friday, 20 November 2026. Many Hindus believe Vishnu wakes on this day from a four-month sleep, so it closes Chaturmas and reopens the season for weddings and housewarmings. It is kept most widely in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Prabodhini comes from the Sanskrit for awakening, and the day goes by many names. In Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh most people say Dev Uthani or Devuthani Gyaras, gyaras being the everyday word for the eleventh. Marathi almanacs call it Kartiki Ekadashi, ISKCON calendars list it as Utthana Ekadashi, and in Nepal it is Thulo Ekadashi, the big one.

It is the second bookend of a pair. Four months earlier, on Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha, Vishnu is said to lie down on the serpent Shesha in the ocean of milk. Dev Uthani is the morning he gets up. It falls about eleven days after Diwali and four days before Kartik Purnima.

Why weddings wait for this day

The four months between the two Ekadashis are Chaturmas, which roughly covers the monsoon and the weeks after it. Many Hindus take on vows during this time: giving up onion and garlic, or certain foods, or eating one meal a day. Jain monks keep their own monsoon retreat in the same season, and Buddhist monks keep the Vassa. Scholars trace the custom to wandering ascetics who stopped travelling in the rains, when roads were bad and every step crushed new plant and insect life.

Weddings, the mundan haircut, griha pravesh and other household sacraments are put off while Vishnu sleeps. The reasoning is simple: the deity who protects these beginnings should be awake to bless them. So Dev Uthani is when north Indian families start booking halls, caterers and bands in earnest.

The first wedding muhurat in the panchang is not always on the Ekadashi itself, so families still fix the day with their own priest. In many homes the first wedding of the season is a symbolic one: Tulsi Vivah, the marriage of the tulsi plant to Vishnu. Some families do it on the Ekadashi evening, others on Dwadashi the next day, and Maharashtra spreads it from Dwadashi to Kartik Purnima.

Why calendars sometimes show two dates

The day is set by the moon, not the sun. Dev Uthani is the Ekadashi tithi of Kartik Shukla paksha, and a tithi rarely lines up neatly with a calendar day. Smarta panchangs, the ones most households use, generally take the day on which Ekadashi is running at sunrise.

Vaishnava calendars apply a stricter test. If the tenth tithi, Dashami, is still running in the 96 minutes before sunrise, the Ekadashi counts as "touched" and the fast moves to the next day. In some years the two systems land a day apart. When that happens, ISKCON temples and the Bhagwat Ekadashi in Marathi almanacs follow the later date, and so does the Pandharpur yatra.

Drik Panchang's guidance for such years is that householders fast on the first date, while the second, called Gauna Ekadashi, is meant for sannyasis and those seeking moksha.

The fast and the parana

The Ekadashi fast runs across three days, not one.

  1. Dashami (day before)
    One meal

Most people eat a single meal earlier in the day and nothing after it.

  2. Ekadashi
    The fast

The strict go nirjala, with no food or water. Most keep a phalahar fast: fruit, milk, singhara (water chestnut) flour, sweet potato, sabudana. Rice, wheat, other grains and dals are avoided.

  3. Ekadashi evening
    The waking puja

Families draw the chauk, set up sugarcane, beat a plate or soop, and sing to wake the deity. Many stay up for bhajans.

  4. Dwadashi morning
    Parana

The fast is broken after sunrise and within Dwadashi tithi, but not during the opening window called Hari Vasara. Morning is preferred and midday is avoided.

The parana window depends on when Dwadashi starts and ends, so it shifts every year and from city to city. Check a panchang set to your own town.

How homes and regions mark the day

In Uttar Pradesh and the neighbouring Hindi belt, the ritual happens in the courtyard or on the kitchen floor. Women draw a chauk with rice-flour paste and geru, often with the deity's feet drawn walking into the house, and put up a small canopy of sugarcane stalks over it. Seasonal produce is laid out: sugarcane, singhara, sweet potato, ber. At dusk or before dawn someone beats a brass plate or a winnowing basket, the soop, and the women sing the waking song.

Utho dev, baitho dev, anguriya chatkao dev. Rise, lord. Sit up, lord. Stretch your fingers, lord.

Traditional Dev Uthani waking song of north Indian homes

Some homes keep a ghee lamp burning under a sieve through the night and lift it for the morning aarti. Elsewhere the day looks quite different.

WhereWhat happens
Sugarcane belt of UP and BiharThe cane harvest opens. Farmers do a puja in the field, cut the first canes, and by old custom give five each to the priest, blacksmith, carpenter, washerman and water-carrier.
Pandharpur, MaharashtraThe Kartiki yatra. Varkaris gather at the Vitthal-Rukmini temple on the Chandrabhaga for kirtan through the night. The official mahapuja before dawn has in recent years been led by the Deputy Chief Minister, with a varkari couple chosen from the pilgrims. Marathi almanacs also mark Sant Namdev's jayanti on this Ekadashi.
Junagadh, GujaratThe Lili Parikrama, a 36 km walk around Mount Girnar through forest, begins on this Ekadashi and runs to Kartik Purnima.
Swaminarayan templesThe day recalls Swaminarayan's initiation by Ramanand Swami in 1800. Followers keep a waterless fast.
ISKCON and other Vaishnava templesBhishma Panchak begins, a five-day vow that runs to Kartik Purnima.

Bhishma Panchak honours Bhishma, who in the Mahabharata taught Yudhishthira about duty from his bed of arrows with Krishna present. ISKCON Delhi describes three grades of the vow, the gentlest a simple rice-and-ghee khichdi, and cites the Padma Purana for it.

What to write, and what to avoid

Do

  • Wish people on the date they keep. A friend who follows ISKCON or a Marathi Bhagwat calendar may fast a day after the Smarta date.
  • Use their name for the day: Dev Uthani or Gyaras in the Hindi belt, Kartiki Ekadashi in Maharashtra, Utthana Ekadashi in ISKCON circles.
  • If a colleague is fasting, move the working lunch rather than asking them to sit through it.
  • For a family with a wedding in the coming months, connect your wish to it. The date is the reason the planning starts now.

Avoid

  • Don't plan a team meal around rice, rotis or dal that day. Those are exactly what the fast leaves out.
  • Don't send a Tulsi Vivah message as a Dev Uthani one. The two are linked, but families treat them as separate rituals and sometimes separate days.
  • Don't send a breakfast photo before the parana time. The fast is not over at sunrise.
To parents
Pranam, Ma and Papa. I can hear the plate and the soop from here. Keep a stick of ganna for me, and may Hari wake to a full and healthy house.
To a friend who is fasting
Hope the fast is going gently today. Parana tomorrow morning, and I'll keep the food talk to myself until then. Jai Shri Hari.
To a family planning a wedding
Dev uth gaye, so the dates can finally be fixed. Wishing the whole family a smooth road to the mandap, and a pandit who agrees with everyone.
To a couple whose wedding waited out Chaturmas
Four months of waiting are done. May the first muhurat be yours and the rest of the season be kind to you both.
To a colleague
Happy Dev Uthani Ekadashi. If you're fasting, let's push the lunch meeting to tomorrow. Hope the day goes easy.
To a varkari friend
Ram Krishna Hari. Wishing you Vithoba's darshan this Kartiki, at Pandharpur or from wherever you are.
From a friend of another faith
Wishing you and your family a peaceful Prabodhini Ekadashi. I hope the fast goes well and the season that follows brings good news home.

How to wish someone on Dev Uthani Ekadashi

A good Dev Uthani wish is short and devotional, and often practical. Many people are fasting until the parana meal the next morning, so wish them an easy fast rather than a feast. For a family with a wedding waiting, this is the day the calendar opens again, so tie the wish to their plans. Use the name the family uses, whether Hari, Vishnu or Vitthal, and keep Tulsi Vivah greetings for that ritual.

Frequently asked questions

Why are Hindu weddings not held before Dev Uthani Ekadashi?

Many Hindus believe Vishnu sleeps for the four months of Chaturmas, from Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha to Dev Uthani Ekadashi in Kartik, and that weddings and other sacraments should wait until he is awake to bless them. Dev Uthani reopens the wedding season, though families still choose the exact date from a panchang muhurat.

When do you break the Dev Uthani Ekadashi fast?

The Dev Uthani Ekadashi fast is broken the next morning, on Dwadashi, after sunrise and before Dwadashi tithi ends. Panchangs advise waiting until the Hari Vasara window has passed and prefer a morning parana to a midday one, so check the time for your own city.

What can you eat during the Dev Uthani Ekadashi fast?

Those keeping a phalahar fast on Dev Uthani Ekadashi eat fruit, milk, singhara flour, sweet potato and sabudana, and avoid rice, wheat, other grains and dals. The strictest observers keep a nirjala fast with no food or water until the parana the next morning.

Is Tulsi Vivah on the same day as Dev Uthani Ekadashi?

Tulsi Vivah begins around Dev Uthani Ekadashi but is not always on the same day. Some families perform it on the Ekadashi evening, many on Dwadashi the next day, and in Maharashtra it can be held on any day from Dwadashi to Kartik Purnima.

Why do some calendars show two dates for Prabodhini Ekadashi?

Smarta calendars usually take the day when Ekadashi tithi is running at sunrise, while Vaishnava calendars move the fast a day later if the previous tithi, Dashami, lingers in the 96 minutes before sunrise. In years when the rules disagree, households following Smarta practice fast on the first date and ISKCON and Bhagwat followers on the second.

What is the difference between Devshayani and Dev Uthani Ekadashi?

Devshayani Ekadashi, in the month of Ashadha, is when Vishnu is believed to go to sleep, and Dev Uthani Ekadashi, in Kartik, is when he wakes. The four months between them are Chaturmas, a season of vows in which weddings are put off.
