About Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve is the night of 24 December, when Christians hold the vigil and midnight services that open Christmas. In 2026 it falls on Thursday, 24 December 2026. In India it is the bigger night for many church-going families, from Goa and Kerala to Mizoram and Meghalaya, and it is a state holiday in some northeastern states.

Why does Christmas start the night before?

In the church's way of counting, a day begins at sunset, a habit inherited from Jewish practice. So the evening of 24 December already belongs to Christmas. Western churches call the day itself the Vigil of the Nativity and treat it as the last day of Advent, the four weeks of waiting and preparation.

The night service is very old. Egeria, a pilgrim who travelled to the Holy Land between 381 and 384, wrote about Christians in Jerusalem keeping a vigil at Bethlehem through the night and walking back by torchlight to arrive at dawn. In the fifth century Pope Sixtus III brought the custom to Rome, holding a Mass after cockcrow in a chapel made to look like the Bethlehem cave at the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. That cockcrow hour gave the service its Portuguese name, Missa do Galo, the rooster's Mass, which Goa still uses. By the twelfth century any priest could say three Christmas Masses: at midnight, at dawn and in the day.

Not every church holds a Mass. Catholics and Kerala's Syrian churches celebrate the Eucharist, while the Presbyterian and Baptist churches of Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland gather for worship and long congregational singing.

Carol rounds, the nights before

In Kerala, the evenings of December belong to carol groups. Parish groups visit the homes of their members, and local clubs go round every house in the area, whatever the family's religion, often with someone dressed as Christmas Papa, Kerala's Santa. A lit paper star outside a house once marked it as a Christian home. Now many Hindu and Muslim families hang one too, often because the children ask, and streets in Kottayam and Pala are strung with them through December.

In Shillong, carollers walk the neighbourhoods with guitars, singing in Khasi and English. After the late service, people stand outside the old stone churches with cups of tea in the cold before going home. In Mizoram, Christmas Eve has its own name, Urlawk Zan, and the night is spent in church in worship and zaikhawm, singing together in Mizo.

Consoada: sweets for a house in mourning

In Goa, a Catholic family that has lost someone during the year does not make Christmas sweets or celebrate. On the evening of 24 December, after sunset, relatives and close friends send them consoada: a basket lined with white cloth, with a little of every sweet made at home, such as dodol, neureos, bebinca, kulkuls and bolinhas. The Goan daily Herald traces the custom to Goa's pre-Portuguese Hindu families rather than to Portugal, where consoada meant the plain supper of salt cod and potatoes eaten on Christmas Eve after a day of fasting.

The idea carries beyond Goa. For any Christian family that has buried someone this year, Christmas Eve can be the hardest night of December. Send food or a short note, and say the person's name.

What to write on Christmas Eve

Send your message in the afternoon or early evening. By night many families are at church, and the phone stays in a pocket until well past midnight. "Merry Christmas" is fine on the 24th; so is "Wishing you a peaceful Christmas Eve".

Spare a thought for people working tonight: nurses, police, hotel staff, airline crews. The Christmas story itself starts with people at work after dark.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

Luke 2:8, King James Version
For a Christian colleague
Wishing you and your family a peaceful Christmas Eve. Enjoy the service tonight, and please leave the laptop shut till the 26th.
For a friend on night duty
Merry Christmas Eve to the person who will hear the church bells from a hospital corridor. Hope the ward stays quiet and someone saves you cake.
For someone alone in a new city
Thinking of you tonight. If the flat feels too quiet, there is a carol service near you at nine, and a chair at our table tomorrow.
For parents, when you can't get home
Couldn't make it home this year, Mummy. Switch on the star for me, and keep me on speaker when the carols start.
For a friend in Shillong
Merry Christmas. Sing loud tonight, and drink a cup of that after-church tea for me.
For a family that lost someone this year
We are thinking of you tonight, and of Uncle Joe. Sending a little of what we made at home, with love.
For a team in a mixed office
To everyone celebrating, a happy Christmas. Thank you for wrapping up early so people can get home and to church on time.

Do

  • Wish your Christian colleagues before they leave on the 24th. It lands better than a message lost among hundreds on the 25th.
  • If a carol group comes to your door, open it, listen to a song and offer tea or something sweet.
  • Text rather than call between about 9 pm and 1 am. The family may be in church.

Avoid

  • Don't send meat dishes or wine on the 24th to a Kerala family keeping the Nativity fast. It ends after the night service.
  • Don't send "Merry Christmas" with party emojis to a family in its first Christmas after a death.
Missa de Galo
The Christmas night Mass in Goa, named after the rooster's crow
Urlawk Zan
Christmas Eve in Mizo, a night of worship and singing
Zaikhawm
Congregational singing in Mizoram's churches, often hours long
Consoada
In Goa, the basket of Christmas sweets sent to a family in mourning, usually on the evening of 24 December
Ruai
A Mizo community feast, held after church on Christmas Day
Fatu
The volunteers, usually men, who cook the meat for a Mizo ruai

The day that follows has its own page, Christmas, with the food and the family lunch. A week later comes New Year's Eve, which in Mizoram, Meghalaya and Nagaland is another night spent in church, before New Year's Day.

How to wish someone on Christmas Eve

A Christmas Eve message is quieter than a Christmas Day one. Send it in the afternoon or early evening, before the family leaves for church, and mention the service, the carols or the star outside their house. For someone working the night, away from home or alone, say you are thinking of them tonight. For a family that has lost someone this year, skip "Merry", name the person they are missing, and if you can, send something sweet to the house.

Frequently asked questions

When is Christmas Eve in 2026?

Christmas Eve 2026 falls on Thursday, 24 December 2026.

What time is midnight Mass in India?

It depends on the parish. Many city churches now start carols around 9 or 9:30 pm and the Mass by 10 pm, because rules on loudspeakers limit amplified sound late at night, while others keep a later start. Check the parish notice a week before.

Is Christmas Eve a holiday in India?

Christmas Eve is on the central government's list of restricted holidays, so central government staff may take it as one of their two optional days, but offices stay open. Mizoram and Meghalaya give state holidays from 24 to 26 December. Elsewhere it is a working day for most offices, though many Christian staff take leave.

Why is Christmas celebrated on the night of 24 December?

Churches have long counted a day from sunset, so Christmas begins on the evening of the 24th. A night vigil at Bethlehem is recorded from the fourth century, and Rome added a Mass after cockcrow in the fifth, which grew into today's midnight Mass.

Is it right to say Merry Christmas on Christmas Eve?

Yes. Christians themselves exchange "Merry Christmas" from the evening of the 24th, since the feast has begun by then. "Happy Christmas Eve" or "Wishing you a peaceful Christmas Eve" also works, and is a good choice for a colleague you are wishing before they leave work.

What is consoada in Goa?

In Goa, consoada is the basket of homemade Christmas sweets sent on the evening of 24 December to a Catholic family that has lost someone during the year and is not celebrating. In Portugal the same word means the light supper eaten on Christmas Eve.

What is Urlawk Zan?

Urlawk Zan is the Mizo name for Christmas Eve. In Mizoram it is a night spent in church with worship and zaikhawm, long congregational singing, before the community feasts of Christmas Day.
