About Valentine's Week

Valentine's Week is the eight themed days from Rose Day to Valentine's Day, and in 2027 it begins on Sunday, 7 February 2027. Each day has one small gesture, from a rose on the 7th to a hug on the 12th. Students and young couples in India follow it most, but friends, spouses and families join in.

The eight days, and one card idea for each

The dates never move: Rose Day is always 7 February and Valentine's Day always 14 February. Only the weekdays change.

8 FebruaryPropose DaySay it plainly, or ask again after years of marriageA curtains opening and one honest line
9 FebruaryChocolate DayChocolates swapped with friends, classmates and family as much as partnersA gift-box opening, plus a real bar handed over that day
10 FebruaryTeddy DaySoft toys, mostly among teenagers and for younger siblingsA card cover with their childhood photo
11 FebruaryPromise DayOne small promise you can keepA titled list, "3 promises for this year"
12 FebruaryHug DayHugs between friends, family and partners, or a "virtual hug" across citiesSoft background music and a line about the last time you met
13 FebruaryKiss DayA forehead kiss, a goodnight call, a kiss on a baby's cheek"Sealed with a kiss" on an envelope opening
14 FebruaryValentine's DayCards, flowers, a meal together, a handwritten letterA long letter inside, with confetti when it opens

Newspapers print Hug Day on the 12th and Kiss Day on the 13th, though some lists online swap them.

Where the week came from

No person or company is known to have started Valentine's Week. Valentine's Day itself reached Indian cities in the 1990s, after the economy opened up and a new middle class got foreign TV channels and card shops. The longer story of 14 February is on our Valentine's Day page.

The themed days came later, out of the trade around that one date. Card and gift shops, radio and TV, and later social media stretched one day into a week, with something to buy each day. Delivery apps lean in too: a trade report in February 2025 noted Swiggy Instamart's flower orders on Valentine's Day running at 22 times an average day by noon.

That history takes the pressure off. There are no rules to break. Mark one day, all eight, or only the 14th.

Outside India, the week shows up most in Nepal, where colleges, cafes and markets hold events. In Bangladesh, 14 February has also been Pohela Falgun, the first day of spring, since a calendar change in 2020. In most other countries, Valentine's is one day, not eight.

Who marks it, and how

Students are the main audience. Roses sell near college gates on the 7th, and chocolates go round a class on the 9th.

Young couples pick the days that suit them, usually Rose Day, Promise Day and the 14th. Many keep it private, since not every relationship is known at home, and the quietest version is a message at midnight.

Married couples often mark only the 14th, but the week is a good excuse to say something you have stopped saying. On Propose Day, ask your spouse again, as a joke that is not quite a joke.

Friends and family have their own way in. Chocolate Day, Teddy Day, Promise Day and Hug Day suit a best friend, a sister or a younger cousin with no romance at all.

Plan the week with one link card a day

Send one short link card a day and keep the big one for the 14th. People search for a "Valentine week link with name" for exactly this, and it is what Kehdoo makes: type their name, add a photo and a line, pick a look, and get one link to send on WhatsApp. It is free, with no app and no sign-up, and you get an alert when they first open it.

  1. Pick one toneTeasing or sincere, then stay with it. Changing every day reads like a forward.
  2. 7 February: start smallName, one photo, one line, an envelope opening. Send it at midnight or before their first class.
  3. Mid-week: use a listFor Promise Day, "5 things I like about you" says more than a paragraph.
  4. Far apart: add musicFor Hug Day across cities, soft background music and a line about your last meeting.
  5. 14 February: the long oneWrite the long letter, turn on confetti, choose the gift-box opening.
  6. Pair it with one real thingA single rose or their favourite chocolate. The link carries the words; the small thing is the proof.
  7. Ask before you postThe card can be saved as an image for a WhatsApp status. Post it only if they are happy to be seen.

Messages for the week

Change one detail to make any of these yours.

For your girlfriend
Seven days, seven small things. Here is the first: I still replay the voice note you sent the night we first spoke. Happy Valentine's Week.
For your boyfriend
You remembered how I take my coffee on our second date. I have kept count of things like that ever since. Happy Valentine's Week.
For your wife
Eleven years, two children, one leaking kitchen tap, and you still laugh at my worst jokes. This week the tea and the dishes are mine. Happy Valentine's Week.
For your husband
You never ask for anything for yourself, so I am asking for you: one long evening walk, phones left at home. Happy Valentine's Week.
For a partner far away
A rose by link is not the same, I know. Count it as a promise of the real one when I am home next month.
For a crush
No big speech. I like talking to you, and I wanted you to know before the week was over. Happy Valentine's Week.
For a best friend
No roses, no teddies. Just one promise: I will pick up your 2 a.m. calls for as long as you keep making them.

Na rose, na teddy. Bas ek promise: raat ke do baje bhi call uthaunga. Happy Valentine's Week, dost.

Joining in without the romance

The week works for anyone you care about, as long as the card makes the relationship clear. A Chocolate Day card to a younger brother or a Hug Day message to a grandmother in another city lands well. For a day meant only for friends, Friendship Day in August fits better, and for someone you have not seen in months, try a Miss You card.

Do

  • Send romantic cards privately. A card opened in a family group or on a shared phone can cause real trouble.
  • Make friendship cards clearly friendly. "For my best friend since Class 6" cannot be misread.
  • Remember that 14 February is also the anniversary of the 2019 Pulwama attack. A private card is fine; loud public posts can land badly.

Avoid

  • Don't send romantic cards, roses or teddies to a colleague or a junior. At work it reads as pressure.
  • Don't use the week to keep asking someone who has said no or not replied.
  • Don't post a card on your status without asking the person in it.

How to wish someone on Valentine's Week

A Valentine's Week wish works best as a small thing that fits the day, not a big speech repeated eight times. Name one real detail about the person, keep the tone right for where you stand with them, and save the longest words for 14 February. Friends, siblings and parents can be wished too, with warmth rather than romance. Send it privately, since not every relationship is known at home or at work, and never use the week to push someone who has not shown interest.

Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.
