About Chocolate Day
Chocolate Day is the third day of Valentine's Week and falls on 9 February every year; in 2027 it is on Tuesday, 9 February 2027. Couples swap chocolates, but in India the day is just as often marked by friends, classmates, siblings and married couples, with a bar, a box of homemade sweets or a short message.
Where Chocolate Day comes from
Chocolate Day has no founder and no old story. Nobody has documented who first named 9 February after chocolate. It is the third day of Valentine's Week, after Propose Day and before Teddy Day. The week grew in India from the late 1990s and 2000s through card and gift shops, FM radio, TV and later WhatsApp and Instagram, on top of a Valentine's Day that had only caught on after the economy opened up in the early 1990s.
The link between chocolate and romance is older and English. Richard Cadbury of the Birmingham chocolate family sold decorated heart-shaped boxes of chocolates for Valentine's Day in the 1860s. Accounts differ on the year (1861 and 1868 are both quoted), but the pairing stuck.
In India, Cadbury set up its local company in 1948, and chocolate has long been the small thing you hand someone when there is good news, much as people hand out mithai. That is why Chocolate Day is the easiest day of the week to join in, at any age.
Chocolate that grows in India
Cocoa is grown in Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, usually as a shade crop between rows of coconut and arecanut palms. Cadbury began trial planting in Kerala in 1965, later ran cocoa research with Kerala Agricultural University, and helped spread the crop to the other three states. Campco, the arecanut and cocoa growers' cooperative in Karnataka, runs its own chocolate factory and buys beans from local farmers. If you want a gift with a story, a bar made from Indian cocoa says more than a bigger box.
How people actually mark it
| Who | What usually happens | A good way to join in |
|---|---|---|
| School students | Toffees and small bars handed round the class | Bring enough for everyone, so nobody is left out |
| College friends and couples | A bar, a box or something homemade, with a note | Keep the note short and private |
| Married couples | A quiet swap at home | Bring back the chocolate you both ate when you first met |
| Friends and siblings | A shared bar and a lot of teasing | Remind them of the share they never returned |
| Parents and children | A treat after dinner, a note in the tiffin box | Add one line about why you are proud of them |
| Office teams | A box in the pantry for everyone | Keep it to the team, never a one-to-one romantic gift |
Japan has named this split since the 1970s: honmei-choco is chocolate for someone you love, giri-choco is courtesy chocolate for colleagues. A shared office box is the Indian giri-choco.
Chocolate, mithai, or neither
You don't need imported pralines. Homemade chocolate barfi, a brownie from the bakery near college or a slab of chikki all count. Check a few things first:
- Allergies. Many chocolates and barfis contain cashew, almond or hazelnut, and milk chocolate contains milk. Ask, or read the label.
- Diabetes or a sugar limit. For a parent or grandparent watching their sugar, ask what they would like, or send the card with a small packet of their favourite dry fruit.
- Food rules and fasts. Some friends check for egg or gelatine, and some fast on certain weekdays. A message works when food doesn't.
- Children. One small bar after a meal is a treat. A big box is a stomach ache.
Sending it as a link card
Every February people search for "Chocolate Day link generator with name" and "Chocolate Day wish link with name". That is exactly what Kehdoo does. You type their name, write a line, pick a look, and get one link to send on WhatsApp. It is free, with no app and no sign-up, and you get an alert when they first open it.
- Their name and a photo. Add a photo of the two of you, or of the chocolate you are about to hand over.
- The gift box opening. The card opens like a box being unwrapped, which suits the day.
- A list instead of a speech. Use the titled list for "5 times you were sweeter than chocolate".
- A short letter inside. For a husband, wife or partner far away, the letter is where the real words go.
- Soft music and confetti when the card opens.
- Good timing. Send it at midnight, before their first class or just before lunch.
- Save it as an image for a friend's WhatsApp status, but only for cards meant to be public.
- One real thing. Pair the link with one small chocolate or a homemade sweet.
Chocolate Day messages
Change one detail to make any of these yours: a name, a place, the brand they always pick.
Do
- Send romantic cards privately. Not every relationship is known at home, and a family WhatsApp group is not the place to find out.
- Include the whole class or the whole team if you are giving at school or work.
- Ask about allergies and sugar before you buy for someone you don't know well.
Avoid
- Don't give a romantic chocolate gift to a colleague or a junior. A box for everyone is the safe version.
- Don't push chocolate on someone who is fasting, dieting or diabetic. The message is enough.
The week carries on with Teddy Day on 10 February and ends with Valentine's Day on the 14th. For a big thank-you to a friend, Friendship Day in August fits better.
How to wish someone on Chocolate Day
A Chocolate Day wish is light and small, and that is its charm. Tie the chocolate to something true about the person: the bar they always steal, the late-night snack you shared, the bad day they fixed. For a partner, warmth beats grand words. For a friend, sibling or child, keep it playful. For a colleague, keep it to the whole team. If they are diabetic, allergic or simply don't eat chocolate, say the sweet thing anyway and skip the box. Send romantic notes privately.
Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.
Language tip: English, Hindi + Hinglish.

Frequently asked questions
When is Chocolate Day in 2027?
Chocolate Day 2027 falls on Tuesday, 9 February 2027.
Chocolate Day kab hai?
Chocolate Day is on 9 February every year, the third day of Valentine's Week, and in 2027 it falls on Tuesday, 9 February 2027. It comes after Propose Day on 8 February and before Teddy Day on 10 February.
Is Chocolate Day on 9 February or 7 July?
Both dates exist, but they are different days. Chocolate Day on 9 February is part of Valentine's Week in India and is about giving chocolate to someone you care about, while World Chocolate Day on 7 July marks chocolate's arrival in Europe and is about chocolate itself.
Can I give chocolate to a friend or colleague on Chocolate Day?
Yes. In India, Chocolate Day is shared between friends, siblings and classmates as much as between couples. For colleagues, put one box out for the whole team rather than giving a single person a gift that could be read as romantic.
What can I give on Chocolate Day to someone with diabetes?
Ask them first, since many people with diabetes can still enjoy a small piece and would rather choose for themselves. If sugar is off the table, send a warm message or link card with a small packet of their favourite dry fruit or a non-food gift, so they get the gesture without the worry.
How do I make a Chocolate Day link with someone's name?
On Kehdoo, type their name, add a photo and a line, pick an opening such as the gift box, and you get one link to send on WhatsApp. It is free, needs no app or sign-up, and tells you when they first open it.
What should I write on Chocolate Day for my wife or husband?
Write one small, true thing about your life together, such as the chocolate they always steal from your plate or the treat they bring home after a bad day. A specific memory says more after years of marriage than a line about love being sweet.
