About New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve is 31 December, the last night of the Gregorian year, and in 2026 it falls on Thursday, 31 December 2026. In India it is a working day almost everywhere, and the celebrating happens after dark, at house parties, on Marine Drive and MG Road, in temple queues that start at midnight, and in a flood of phone messages at 12.

How India spends 31 December

New Year's Eve has no ritual of its own in India, so people fill the night in very different ways. For most families it stays at home. Dinner runs late, the television counts down, children are allowed to stay up, and at 12 someone rings the grandparents. Among friends it is the house party, where the real planning question is who is driving and who is staying over.

City crowds gather in the same places every year. In Mumbai it is Marine Drive, Girgaum Chowpatty and Bandra Bandstand. In Bengaluru it is MG Road, Brigade Road and Church Street, which police close to vehicles from 8 pm to 2 am. Hill stations fill up too: Shimla's Ridge holds a crowd at midnight, and on 30 December 2022 police spent four hours clearing about 400 vehicles stuck at the Atal Tunnel beyond Manali. Goa and Fort Kochi have their own traditions, covered on the New Year's Day page.

Many Indians see the year out at a place of worship. Devotees start queuing at Mumbai's Siddhivinayak temple from midnight, and on 1 January 2026 the temple opened at 3:15 am for an expected three to four lakh visitors. The Sai Baba temple at Shirdi stays open through the night of 31 December and skips its usual night and dawn aartis to keep darshan going. Churches hold watchnight services that carry the congregation past midnight in prayer, and many gurdwaras hold kirtan into the night, with an ardaas at 12 and langar after.

When midnight reaches India, and everyone else

The first inhabited place to see the new year is Kiritimati in Kiribati's Line Islands, which moved to UTC+14 at the end of 1994. India, on UTC+5:30, gets there eight and a half hours later, fifteen minutes after Nepal.

That gap matters if your family is spread out. The times below are in Indian Standard Time and hold every year, because in December the southern hemisphere is on summer time and the northern hemisphere is not.

The midnight message rush

The last time WhatsApp published an India figure, its users here sent more than 20 billion messages in the 24 hours up to midnight on 31 December 2019, out of 100 billion worldwide, at that point the busiest day in the app's history. More than 12 billion of the global total were images.

So a message sent at 12:00 lands in a phone already buzzing with forwarded fireworks.

  • Write one line that is yours. A forwarded graphic gets a thumbs-up; a sentence about the person gets read.
  • Send elders their wish early. Many parents and grandparents sleep by ten. A message at nine, or a call at breakfast, beats a buzz that wakes them at midnight.
  • Keep work out of midnight. For a boss or client, a short note on the evening of the 31st or the morning of the 1st reads as considered. A 12:01 am forward reads as reflex.
  • Use "Reached home?" freely. For friends who are out, it is a fine first message of the year.

Getting home safely, and the people working tonight

Drink-driving is the one rule worth knowing before you leave. Under section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, the limit is 30 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood. Since the 2019 amendment, a first offence carries up to six months in jail, a fine of up to Rs 10,000, or both, and a second offence up to two years and Rs 15,000.

Police enforce it hardest on this night. On 31 December 2025, Mumbai put more than 1,700 traffic police on the roads and booked 211 drunk drivers, down from 333 a year earlier. Bengaluru set up 166 drink-driving checkpoints and closed every flyover except the airport road from 11 pm to 6 am.

Decide who is driving before the first drink, or leave the car at home. Fix your ride back before midnight, not after. In Mumbai, Western Railway has run extra local trains between Churchgate and Virar in the small hours, and Bengaluru police point people to Namma Metro and BMTC buses.

Remember who is working while you celebrate: police, nurses, cab drivers, security guards and delivery riders. On 31 December 2025, Zomato and Blinkit said more than 4.5 lakh delivery partners delivered over 75 lakh orders, their highest ever, on the same day gig workers' unions called a strike over pay and ten-minute delivery targets. Order earlier in the evening, tip if you can, and don't rate a rider down for being late on this night.

One new year among many

For many Indian families, 31 December is a pleasant night and nothing more. Their real new year, with prayers and new clothes, comes on another date: Gujarati New Year the day after Diwali, Ugadi and Gudi Padwa in Chaitra, Puthandu in April. A warm wish on 31 December need not claim more than it is. The others are on the 2026 calendar.

Banks and offices work on 31 December in nearly every state. Mizoram is the main exception, where banks close for New Year's Eve.

What to write tonight

For a boss
Wishing you and your family a happy New Year. Thank you for backing the team through a long year. See you on the other side, rested.
For a close friend
A few more minutes and this year is officially behind us. You were the best part of it. Happy New Year, and call me when the fireworks stop.
For someone who had a hard year
I know this year asked a lot of you. I won't promise the next one will be easier. I'll just say I'm here for it, whatever it brings.
For parents, sent early
Happy New Year, Maa and Papa. Sending this at nine so you don't have to stay up for it. Sleep well, I'll call first thing tomorrow.
For family in Dubai
It's 12 here and you still have an hour and a half to go. Everyone's up, even Dadi. Happy New Year from home, call when it reaches you.
For family in the US or UK
By the time you read this we'll have been in the new year for hours. Happy New Year from all of us. Call in your morning, we'll be at Nani's.
For a friend on duty tonight
Happy New Year to the only one in our group working at midnight. Thank you for keeping the ward running. Breakfast is on me.

Do

  • Mention one real thing from the person's year. A move, a recovery, a new job, a child's first word.
  • Check on friends who are out, and offer a bed or a lift if you can.

Avoid

  • Don't tell someone who is grieving, ill or out of work to "make next year the best one yet".
  • Don't press anyone to drink or to stay out, and don't tease friends who spend the night at home or at a temple.

How to wish someone on New Year's Eve

A New Year's Eve wish looks back as much as forward. Name one thing the person got through or did well this year, and keep it short enough to read in a busy chat at midnight. Send elders their wish before they sleep or call them in the morning, time messages abroad to the recipient's midnight, and for anyone who had a hard year, skip the "best year yet" lines and simply say you are around.

Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.

Language tip: English, Hindi + recipient language.

Should I wish Happy New Year on 31 December or wait until midnight?

Both are fine. Close friends usually wait for 12, while elders who sleep early, bosses and clients are better wished on the evening of 31 December or the morning of 1 January. For family abroad, send it at their midnight rather than yours.

What should I write to someone who had a difficult year?

Acknowledge the year honestly and skip the fresh-start talk. A line such as "I know this year asked a lot of you, and I'm here for whatever the next one brings" is kinder than wishing them the best year of their life.
