About Rose Day
Rose Day falls on Sunday, 7 February 2027 and opens Valentine's week, which runs to 14 February. Couples, friends and school and college students give a single rose, usually red for love or yellow for friendship, or send a card instead. It grew in India as a shop and social media custom, not as a religious or official day.
Where Rose Day comes from
Rose Day has no known founder and no old story behind it. It is the opening day of Valentine's Week, a run of themed days that Indian shops, FM radio, TV and later Instagram and WhatsApp built up in front of Valentine's Day on 14 February.
Valentine's Day itself caught on in India after the economy opened up in the early 1990s, when a new middle class had foreign TV channels and card shops within reach. Card companies such as Archies taught a generation to say it with a card or a gift. The longer week, with a different gift for each day, spread among students through the late 1990s and 2000s. The rose was already the flower of romance in Europe, and one stem is cheap enough for a student.
Many of the roses sold that week are grown in India. In the Hosur area of Tamil Nadu's Krishnagiri district, near Bengaluru, nearly 2,000 acres are under roses, and the red Taj Mahal variety sells best. In February 2026 the Chennai daily DT Next reported single stems selling for ₹25 to ₹35 at retail and export-quality stems for ₹50 to ₹55, as demand peaked before the 14th.
How people mark Rose Day
- School and college students swap single roses, often yellow ones between friends. Some schools frown on this, so a card on the phone travels better than a flower in a school bag.
- Couples give one red rose, sometimes a bunch, and many send a message at midnight so it is the first thing the other person sees.
- Married couples use it as a small excuse. A rose with the morning tea after twelve years of marriage lands better than a big bouquet.
- Friends give yellow roses or post a group photo with "Happy Rose Day" on it.
- Families join in too. Children give a rose to a mother or a grandmother, and some parents send a rose emoji to the family group.
Not every relationship is known at home. If yours isn't, send your wish to their personal chat, not to a shared phone or a family group.
What each rose colour means
The meanings below come from the Victorian "language of flowers", which reached England from Ottoman Turkey in the 1700s, and from what florists say today. The old flower dictionaries did not agree with each other, so treat these as a modern habit, not a rule. Your words matter more than the shade.
| Colour | What people read into it | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Romantic love | A partner, husband or wife |
| Pink | Admiration, liking someone, thanks | A crush, a new relationship, a mother or sister |
| Yellow | Friendship and warmth | A best friend, a classmate, a sibling |
| White | Respect, a fresh start, peace | Making up after a fight, an elder, a teacher |
| Orange or peach | Excitement, attraction, thanks | Someone new you are getting to know |
| Lavender | Being taken with someone at first sight | A crush you have only just met |
Rose Day wishes to send
Keep it to two or three lines and add one detail only you would know.
A Rose Day card sent as a link
Every February, people search for a "Rose Day link generator with name" or a "Rose Day wish link with name". That is what Kehdoo makes. You type their name, write a line, pick a look, and get one link to send. It is free, with no app and no sign-up.
Ideas that work by link:
| Idea | How to do it |
|---|---|
| Their name and your photo | Put their name on the card and add a photo of the two of you, or of the rose you bought them |
| A short letter inside | Use the letter space for four or five lines about the day you first noticed them |
| A list | Give it a title like "5 things I like about you" and keep each line short |
| The right opening | An envelope for a love note, a gift box for a surprise, curtains for a reveal, a card cover for a classic feel |
| Music and confetti | Add soft background music and let confetti fall when the card opens |
| Timing | Send it at midnight, or before their first class or meeting. You get an alert when they first open it |
| For their status | Download the card as an image so they can put it on their WhatsApp status if they want to |
| One real thing | Pair the link with a single rose or a chocolate left on their desk or bag |
If you are planning the whole week, send this one on 7 February and follow with a Propose Day card the next day. For a partner in another city, the miss you messages may suit better on the days you can't meet.
Rose Day etiquette
Do
- Send it privately unless you know they would like a public post.
- Choose yellow, or say "as a friend", when that is what you mean.
- Give your mother, sister or grandmother a rose too. Rose Day is not only for couples.
- Accept a "thank you" as the full reply. A rose is not a question that needs an answer.
Avoid
- Don't give a red rose to a colleague or a junior at work. It reads as pressure, whatever you meant.
- Don't send a rose to an ex or to someone who has stopped replying to you.
- Don't post a photo of a rose with someone's name tagged without asking them first.
How to wish someone on Rose Day
A Rose Day wish is short and pairs with a flower, real or not. Say why this person gets your rose: one habit, one memory, one thing you would miss. Pick the colour to match the relationship, so red for a partner and yellow for a friend, and say so if you are unsure. Keep it light for someone new and grateful for a husband or wife. Send it privately, since not every relationship is known at home.
Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.
Language tip: English, Hindi + Hinglish.

Frequently asked questions
When is Rose Day in 2027?
Rose Day 2027 falls on Sunday, 7 February 2027.
Rose Day kab hai?
Rose Day is on 7 February every year, and in 2027 it falls on Sunday, 7 February 2027. It is the first day of Valentine's week, so Propose Day follows on 8 February and Valentine's Day closes the week on the 14th.
What colour rose should I give a friend?
Yellow is the usual choice for a friend on Rose Day, because it is read as friendship rather than romance. White or pink also work for a friend or a family member, while red is generally kept for a partner.
Is Rose Day the same as World Rose Day?
No. Rose Day on 7 February is the romantic start of Valentine's week. World Rose Day on 22 September is a day of support for people living with cancer, named after Melinda Rose, a Canadian girl who had cancer, and the right message on that day is about hope and care, not romance.
How many roses should I give on Rose Day?
There is no fixed rule. A single rose is the most common Rose Day gift in India and says enough on its own, while a bunch suits a partner or a wife or husband you want to make a fuss of.
How do I make a Rose Day link with my partner's name?
Open the Kehdoo card maker, type their name, add a photo and a short message, choose an opening such as an envelope or a gift box, and share the single link on WhatsApp. It is free, needs no app or sign-up, and you get an alert when they first open it.
