About World Health Day

World Health Day on 7 April marks the founding of the World Health Organization in 1948. Each year the WHO uses the day to draw global attention to a priority health issue and to the goal of good health for everyone, everywhere.

The World Health Organization's constitution came into force on 7 April 1948, creating the UN agency responsible for global public health. World Health Day has been held on this date since 1950, and it celebrates the idea that health is a basic human right.

Each year, the WHO picks a theme that focuses attention on an important health issue, and uses the day to start conversations and campaigns that continue through the year.

How it is marked

Health ministries, hospitals and NGOs hold free health check-up camps, awareness talks and walks or runs. Schools organise sessions on hygiene, nutrition, exercise and mental well-being, and students create posters or short plays about healthy habits. Workplaces often run health screenings, yoga or fitness sessions, and share information on staying well. In India, many people use the day to thank doctors, nurses, ASHA workers and other health staff who keep communities running, and to book a check-up they have been putting off.

What to write

A good message wishes the person health and happiness, or thanks someone who works to keep others well.

  • Happy World Health Day! I've booked both our check-ups for Saturday, so no excuses this year.
  • Thank you for all those night shifts, Doctor. The whole ward felt safe with you there.
  • Morning walk starts Monday, 6.30 sharp. Telling you now so you can't back out.
