About Gita Jayanti

Gita Jayanti marks the day Hindu tradition says Krishna spoke the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. It falls on the eleventh day of the bright half of Margashirsha, which in 2026 is Sunday, 20 December 2026, the same day as the Mokshada Ekadashi fast. Readings of the Gita are held in temples, homes and schools, and Haryana holds a festival at Kurukshetra.

The Bhagavad Gita is a conversation of 700 verses in 18 chapters, set inside the Bhishma Parva, the sixth book of the Mahabharata. Two armies of the same family face each other at Kurukshetra. Arjuna asks his charioteer, Krishna, to drive between them, sees his teachers and cousins on the other side, and puts down his bow. The Gita is Krishna's answer. It reaches the reader at one remove: Sanjaya, the blind king Dhritarashtra's adviser, narrates it to the king.

Tradition holds that this conversation took place on Shukla Ekadashi of Margashirsha, and Gita Jayanti keeps that day as the book's birthday. Drik Panchang counts the 2026 observance as the 5,163rd anniversary, a reckoning that follows the traditional start of the Kali Yuga. Historians date the text differently. Most place its composition around the second or first century BCE, though estimates range from a few centuries earlier to the first century CE. Both views sit side by side, and neither changes how the day is kept.

Gita Jayanti and Mokshada Ekadashi

The same lunar day carries two observances, and calendars often list both.

Mokshada Ekadashi is the fast. Like every Ekadashi, it is kept for Vishnu, usually with fruit, milk and non-grain foods, and broken the next morning on Dwadashi. Its own story, as Drik Panchang summarises it, is of King Vaikhanasa, who saw his late father suffering in the afterlife. On the advice of the sage Parvata, he kept this fast and gave its merit to his father, who was released. Moksha means release, which gives the Ekadashi its name.

Gita Jayanti is the reading. People who do not fast still read the Gita that day, in full or in part, alone or in a group.

Many people do both. The parana, the time to break the fast, depends on when Dwadashi begins and ends in your city, so check a local panchang rather than a national one.

In some years the day is also Vaikunta Ekadashi, the great Ekadashi of south Indian Vishnu temples. That happens only when the Margashirsha Ekadashi falls after the sun enters Dhanu in mid-December. Drik Panchang puts both on 20 December 2026. In 2027 Gita Jayanti comes on 9 December, before the sun reaches Dhanu, so the two are separate.

Kurukshetra's Gita Mahotsav

Kurukshetra in Haryana is where the tradition places the battle, and Jyotisar, near Thanesar, is the spot where Krishna is said to have given the teaching. The Haryana government, through the Kurukshetra Development Board, Haryana Tourism and the district administration, holds the International Gita Mahotsav there every year. The 2025 edition was the tenth and ran for 21 days, from mid-November to early December, with Madhya Pradesh as the partner state.

Pilgrims bathe in the Brahma Sarovar and the Sannihit Sarovar. A Gita Maha Aarti is held on the banks of the Brahma Sarovar on each day of the festival, with a craft fair around the tank, a book fair, seminars and katha. Cultural programmes are held at sites along the 48 kos parikrama, the circuit of tirthas around Kurukshetra. On Gita Jayanti itself, Jyotisar holds a Gita yagya and recitation, and about 18,000 students recite verses together at the Theme Park in Kurukshetra, a practice that ran online in 2020 during Covid.

How people keep the day

Most of what happens is reading. Some households read all 18 chapters in one sitting. Others take a single chapter, often one they return to through the year. Temples and study groups hold a path, a group recitation in Sanskrit, sometimes followed by a talk on a verse. In Haryana, schools hold recitation and quiz contests for students in the weeks around the day.

The verse quoted most often is a line on action without attachment to reward.

Karmanyevadhikaraste ma phaleshu kadachana. Your right is to the work alone, never to its fruits.

Bhagavad Gita 2.47

Some people give a copy of the Gita on the day, to a child starting to read it or to a friend who has been curious about it. A translation in the person's own language is easier to start with than a Sanskrit edition.

What to write

Do

  • Quote a verse the person actually likes, or one you have found useful, with its chapter and verse number.
  • If they are fasting for Mokshada Ekadashi, wish them an easy fast and keep meal plans for the next day.
  • For a colleague of another faith, it is fine to wish them well and say you value the Gita as a book of ideas.

Avoid

  • Don't pull a line about fighting out of context for a joke or an office argument. The battlefield setting is serious to many readers.
  • Don't send a "happy Ekadashi feast" wish. The day is a fast for many.
To parents
Pranam, Ma and Papa. Gita Jayanti today, and I still remember you reading chapter 2 to us at bedtime. Wishing you an easy Ekadashi fast and a peaceful path this evening.
To a friend who is fasting
Wishing you a gentle Mokshada Ekadashi fast and a good Gita reading. Parana tomorrow, and I'll save the food talk till then.
To a study group
Happy Gita Jayanti to everyone who turned up week after week. One more chapter tonight, and the chai is on me after the fast.
To a colleague
Wishing you a meaningful Gita Jayanti. Here's to doing the work well and worrying less about the results, as 2.47 says.
To a student
On Gita Jayanti, a small gift and a big book. Read one chapter at a time, and ask me anything you don't follow.
To someone far from home
Wishing you Gita Jayanti greetings from home. Read a few verses tonight wherever you are; it is the same book everywhere.
In Hindi
Gita Jayanti ki hardik shubhkamnayein. Gita ka gyan aapka maarg sada roshan kare. (Warm wishes on Gita Jayanti. May the Gita's wisdom always light your way.)

The Gita is Krishna's teaching as a grown man, the same Krishna whose birth is kept on Janmashtami. The month of Margashirsha holds two more observances a few days apart: Vivah Panchami before it and Datta Jayanti on the full moon after.

How to wish someone on Gita Jayanti

A Gita Jayanti wish is about the book itself: reading it, learning from it, and living by a line from it. A single verse the person loves, or a word about the chapter you are reading together, works better than a generic blessing. Many people are also keeping the Mokshada Ekadashi fast, so wish them an easy fast and skip food talk. For a colleague of another faith, a wish that respects the Gita as a book of thought is enough.
