About Durga Ashtami

Durga Ashtami, or Maha Ashtami, is the eighth day of Sharad Navratri and the busiest day of Durga Puja. In 2026 it falls on Monday, 19 October 2026. North Indian homes feed young girls as the goddess in kanya pujan, Bengal offers morning anjali and Kumari Puja, and Sandhi Puja marks the moment Ashtami turns into Navami.

Ashtami is the eighth lunar day of the bright half of Ashwin, and in the nine-night count of Sharad Navratri it belongs to Mahagauri, the eighth of the nine forms of Durga. She is pictured in white, calm and luminous, riding a bull. The tradition says her skin turned dark during long years of penance and was washed bright again, which is why white is her colour.

For a great many families, Ashtami is also the day the Navratri fast ends. That one fact explains most of what happens: an early puja, a house full of young girls by mid-morning, and a big vegetarian lunch.

Why the date can look odd

Panchangs give Ashtami to the day on which that lunar day is running at the time the puja is due. A lunar day does not match a calendar day, so in some years Ashtami ends in the morning and Navami takes over by noon. Panchangs then list Durga Ashtami, Sandhi Puja and Maha Navami on the same date, and Bengali almanacs, which count the day differently, may keep Navami the following morning. If a friend in Kolkata and a friend in Delhi give you different days, both can be right. The Durga Puja page explains the Bengali almanacs.

Kanya pujan in north India

Across Punjab, Haryana, Himachal, Jammu, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and much of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, Ashtami morning is kanjak or kanya pujan. Girls who have not yet reached puberty, ideally nine of them for the nine forms of the goddess, are invited home and treated as Durga herself. A small boy is often included too. He is the langur or langura, standing for Bhairav, the goddess's guardian.

  1. Welcome at the doorThe girls are seated in a row. Their feet are washed with water, sometimes milk, and wiped dry.
  2. Tilak and threadA tilak of roli and rice goes on each forehead, a red mauli thread is tied on the wrist, and a red chunri may be placed over their heads.
  3. The mealSooji halwa, puri and dry black chana, cooked without onion or garlic, served on a fresh plate or leaf.
  4. Gifts and blessingEach girl gets something to take home: coins or a note, bangles, a small toy or stationery. The family touches their feet and asks for their blessing.
  5. The fast endsOnly after the girls have eaten and left does the family eat the same food and break the fast.

Some families do all of this on Navami instead, and people describe themselves as "Ashtami waale" or "Navami waale" depending on their family custom. Neither is more correct. In a block of flats, the same girls may be invited to five homes in one morning, so families stagger the times, and the girls go home with a bag of puri and a pocket full of coins.

Maha Ashtami in Bengal

In Bengal and among Bengalis everywhere, Ashtami is the centre of the Pujo. People fast through the morning, put on their best new clothes, and crowd into the pandal for pushpanjali: three rounds of flowers and bel leaves offered while the priest recites the mantra line by line and everyone repeats it. Only after anjali do they eat. Many families keep Ashtami niramish, a vegetarian day, with luchi, chholar dal and labra for lunch, and the bhog at the pandal is usually khichuri.

Two rituals make the day.

  • Kumari Puja. A young girl is worshipped as the goddess. Belur Math has held it since its first Durga Puja in 1901, under Swami Vivekananda, and it draws huge crowds there; many family and community pujas do the same.
  • Sandhi Puja. The last 24 minutes of Ashtami and the first 24 of Navami form a single 48-minute window. The tradition says this is when Durga took the form of Chamunda to kill the demons Chanda and Munda. 108 earthen lamps are lit and 108 lotuses offered. Because the window follows the lunar day, Sandhi Puja can fall at noon, at midnight or at dawn.

Belur Math has never held animal sacrifice at its puja. The Belur Math account says Swami Vivekananda wanted it in 1901 and Sarada Devi, the Holy Mother, forbade it, so a banana is offered at Sandhi Puja instead. Many other pujas also offer a symbolic bali, such as a banana, cucumber or ash gourd.

For a colleague
Wishing you and your family a happy Durga Ashtami. Enjoy the puja, and the lunch after.
For a friend far from home
Shubho Ashtami. I know anjali on a laptop screen is not the same. Next year, the real pandal, together.

Do

  • Ask whether a friend's family breaks the fast on Ashtami or Navami before you plan a lunch or a visit.
  • If you host kanjak, invite girls from the neighbourhood whose parents agree, and keep the gifts simple.
  • Take off your shoes, wait your turn and repeat the anjali mantra quietly if you join in at a pandal.

Avoid

  • Don't eat in front of someone who is fasting until anjali or the kanya pujan is over.
  • Don't photograph the Kumari or children at kanjak without their parents' permission.
  • Don't push someone to take meat or onion on a day their family keeps vegetarian.

How to wish someone on Durga Ashtami

An Ashtami wish fits how the person keeps the day. In the north, mention the kanjak girls, the halwa-puri or the fast ending. For Bengali friends, say Shubho Maha Ashtami or Shubho Sharodiya and ask about anjali or the bhog. Someone fasting until anjali or kanya pujan doesn't want food photos before noon. Keep it warm, and skip festive lines for a family in mourning.

Frequently asked questions

When is Durga Ashtami in 2026?

Durga Ashtami 2026 falls on Monday, 19 October 2026.

Is kanya pujan done on Ashtami or Navami?

Both. Families follow their own custom: some honour the girls and break the Navratri fast on Ashtami, others on Navami. Neither is more correct, and many families simply follow what the eldest woman of the house was taught.

What is Sandhi Puja and when does it happen?

Sandhi Puja is held in the 48 minutes that join Ashtami and Navami, the last 24 minutes of one lunar day and the first 24 of the next. Durga is worshipped as Chamunda, with 108 lamps and 108 lotuses. Its clock time changes every year with the tithi, so check a local panchang.

Why are Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami sometimes on the same day?

A lunar day can be shorter than a calendar day. When Ashtami ends in the morning and Navami runs the rest of the day, panchangs list both on one date. Bengali almanacs may then keep Maha Navami on the following day.

Who is Mahagauri, the goddess of the eighth day?

Mahagauri is the eighth of the nine forms of Durga worshipped in Navratri. She is shown in white, riding a bull, and the tradition says her skin was washed bright after long penance. White flowers are a common offering to her on Ashtami.

What is the Kumari Puja at Belur Math?

At Belur Math, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission near Kolkata, a young girl is worshipped as the goddess on Maha Ashtami. Swami Vivekananda began the custom at the monastery's first Durga Puja in 1901, and thousands now come to watch.
